China Asks for Intervention. —
SIR E. SATOW'S REPLY.
Peking, 26th January. The Jiji correspondent called on Sir Ernest Salow anent the French Minister's intervention with regard to the Manchurian question. The Bitish Minister remarked that on Saturday last Chang and lung called on him and sought British intervention Sir Eruest Satow pointer out the impos bility of any intervention at present, as weaker of the lowers concerned bas aked for it The anush Minister added that the Chinese Government aru adopting no settled course and that nobody knows what they will do the next moment. It is, however, believed that Viceroys yuan and Chang will strongly oppose the appeals to the Powers for Intervention. The correspondent believes that the French Minister had an intention to intervene in the Japanese and Russian dispute and that the Chinese officials, who are afraid of an outbreak of hostilities between Japan and Russi, have been endeavouring to find some temporary solution of the Manchurian difficul. ty. The suggested intervention will come to Nothing as neither Great Britain nor America will support the proposal.-Jiji.
