FINANCIAL REVIEW OF THE
EXPOSITION.
TOTAL EXPENDITURES OVER $50,000,000
THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1904.
great Exposition opens its doors its myriad ' displays will represent a total valuation of fully
not greatly in excess of the promised $50,000,000. The Exposinon authorities have placed ipsurance upon the buildings in nearly ago companies, but when the doors are opened this will be allowed to lapse, so that exhibitors may receive the full benefit of all insumace curriend. Another concern of the financial management has been to perfect the plans of the Exposition Company for reimbursing its stockholders from the proceeds of admissions, sales of concessions, etc.
The cost of a great world's fair is met in variety of ways, most of them familiar from previous experiences, but the problems to be solved by those in charge of the financial man- agement of each new enterprise of this char- acter are none the less difficult and the ob- stacles to be surmounted numerous. The great task which the Exposition authorities proposed to perform was; from a direct expenditure of $15,000,000, to evolve an Exposition costing $50,000,000. But in order to accomplish this it was first necessary to secure the $15,000,000, The Congress of the United States voted an appropriation of $5,000,000, to become available when the actual expenditures upon the Exposi tion could be shown to have reached the sum of $10,000,000. This $10,000,000 had, there- fore, to be raised elsewhere and made available in order to secure the Congressional appro priation. It was to the achievement of this preliminary task that President Francis and his associates had first to devote themselves, and it required a tremendous amount of energy and enthusiam, combined with an unusual degree of public confidence, to raise the required amount. In a surprisingly short time, however, the task was done. Capital stock of the Ex- position Company to the amount of $5,000,000 had been subscribed by the public-spirited citizens of St. Louis, and the same amount realized by the sale of bonds authorized by the City of St. Louis for Exposition purposes,
From the report submitted to the President of the United States by Hon. Thomas Carter, the President of the National Commission of the Louisiana Purchase Expasition, it is pos sible to obtain an accurate statement of the finances of the Exposition down to September 30, 1903, at which ́time the figures regarding every department of the work were made up. The total receipts down to the date mentioned aggregated $10,790,070.17, of which the most important items were: Collections on account of sale of capital stock, $4 415,433-39; consider- ation for assignment of unpaid balances on stock subscriptions, new subscriptions and premium on sale of souvenir gold coin, $600,000; proceeds of sale of City of St. Louis bonds, $5,000,000 United States Government special appropriation 8484,718 12, and' souvenir gold coin, 5250,000; rentals $129625; admissions. $65,025. Other sources of income were con cessione, on which preliminary payments amounted to somas, ocos interest on funds,
