hideously burlesqued and volgarized, is piped on a clarionet while the embled witches! Jebr. Under all pulses the terrific plain chanté of the Dies Ira. PHE Undersigned have been favoured with instructions from Rear Admiral ROBINSON
to offer for Sale by PUBLIC AUCTION, WEDNESDAY, the roth February, 1904, at 3 P.1. at their SALES ROOMS, No. 8, Des Voeux Road, (Corner of Ice House Streal), HIS YACHT
"VERNON"
The estimates of production of sugar in 1903 in the countries adhering to the International Union for Sugar Statistice are now known and I beg to insert the figures of them as follows; last year's results in parenthesis. The sugar production is expected to be, in Germany, 4,803,160 tons (1,750,670 tons); in Australis, 1,116,500 tons (1,031,900 tons); in France, 757,- 000 tons (821,000 tons); in Belgium, 215,300 tons (100,000 lons); in Holland 129,300 tons (102,300 tons); in Russia 1,103,000 tons (1,169, ooo tons); in Sweden, 110,795 tons (73.400 tons); and in Denmark, 51,800 tons (37,050 tons). The total of all the conntries comprised in the Statistical Union thus would be 5,286,855 tons, as against 5,156,930 tons, and adding for the countries remaining ontside of the Union, auch as Spain, Italy, Roumania, etc, 229c00 LODs, against 210,000, tons last year, a grand total of 5,506, 855 tons would be re- ached, against 5,366,930 tons in 1901-1903, and there would be moderate surplus of about 140,000 tons, which, barring any larga excess against the estimates, should be easily taken up by the consumption, supposed, by the way, to in rease at a much larger rate than hitherto on account of the reduced taxes in almost all countries adhering to the Brussels' convention, It may be remarked, however, that there are much higher estimates in the field, and that the highest and lowest figures differ by no less than 6:5.000 tons. This is, you will admit, a very wide margin, leaving plenty of room for conjecturing in commercial circles, and for bull and bear movements. Let me add a few words with regard to the estimate of the Ger man crop. There are in the campaign 1903-04 paly 184 factories in activity, as against 300 last year, so that six have vanished from the scene, The saccharine quality is bound to be some- what lower than last year, namely 13.79 per cent against 14.47 per cent in 1901-03 and the total production is estimated to be HAVE This Day RESUMED PRACTICE.
about three per cent larger than last year's. All this, you see, is in strict harmony with the opinions which I ventured to express with regard to this year's crop, and I hope that not only the estimates but also the real results will bear out my prediction on the subject.
In spite of the late legislation against sac. charine this stuff has again become the subiect of public discussion and of complaints by the sugar manufacturers The new law has left a very small loophole for the sale of saccharine and the seems to be made use of on a large sco The law provides that at the drug stores, which are exclusively permilled to sell saccharine, a very small quantity can be sold without medical prescription.
But this pro- vision has led to an abuse which is quite con trary to the spirit of the law, inasmuch as many Buch small quantities are very frequently and sometimes even at once called for and sold so that in many places the apothecaries de quite a flourishing business in saccharine with. out violating the law as it is, but setting that naught by the method of their dealings. The object of restricting the sale of saccharine only for medical purposes is certainly not reached, and it would therefore seem necessary to replace the above provision by a more stringent act of legislatior, both in the interest of the sugar industry and of the Imperial treasury, which is sustaining heavy losses of the sugar tax. You will remember, however, that I always insisted on the saccharine ques. tion being a very knotty one and that it would be a hard thing to hit on measures putting a stop to the competition of saccharine against sugar, because of the very small volume which is peculiar to the question.
The China Sugar Refining Company, in Hongkong, closed the year 1902 with a loss of 600,000 Mexican dollars. The annual report of the establishment declares this unfavourable resull to be the overproduction of beet sugar, which caused such a drop of prices that cane was not able to compete successfully.— Kuhlow's Review.

Strange as it may teem that a medical jour- nal should especially urge physicians to bear a symphony as a means of professional informa- tion, this is precisely what The Lancet does. Berlior's Fantastic Symphony has been recently performed in London, and the paper just men- tioned recommends it to pathologiste us power- fally setting forth "the vague" aspirations, the longings, the loneliness, and the horrible visions of insanity.” Says the writer:

"The protagonist of the symphony is a musi- cian who is possessed by an 'idée Are' (fixed A KOWLOON.
Idea] naturally connected with a woman with whom he is in love. The fint movement gives thla idéo and illustrates ble longings, and in the second mavement be seen his love at a ball. Here the lights and the swirl of the dancers are marvellously Ilustrated by the glitter of harps and the shimmer of a waltz there played by the muted strings. In the third movement the scene is laid in a pastoral country where a melancholy shepherd, illus. trated by a theme for the cor anglais, cails to hie love, who answers him on the oboe, The duet contioses for some time, and finally the cor anglais calls for the last time, but elicits na response but the mutterings of a thunderstorm. The young musician concludes from this that his love is hopeless, and so takes oplum to and bis misery. He only takes enough, however, to give him fearful dreams, the subject "of which is his own march to execution for having killed his love. The dismal proces sion is set forth with wonderfil skill. By means of the throbe and mutteringi. of the drums and of the double-bassen we find *suggested the tramping of feet and the many- poiced cries of the attendant crowds which haunt the hearer with a homble sense of pncanny surroundings. With a crash the axe falls, but the bero's sufferings am not over, for although he is dead, he is now at a witcher Sabbath, where the theme of hie Lidén dag!
