A NAVAL LIEUTENANTS

Sir William Goodman said:-1 feel
great honour to be asked to preside again this year at the annual meeting of The Hongkong Benevolent Society. It is a society, which, in a quet and unobtrusive Iway, is doing a really noble work in the Colony, and I feel me that it only requires to be thoroughly own to the public in order that the tuens should be forthcoming to largely
mcrease its sphere of inuuence and the public' to thoroughly appreciate its work. Hongkong society is so very changing; many people come and others go, and although those who have been here for some time may know about this Society there must be others coming to the olony, who really know little of is they did Therefore, I will read to you the existence, and who wou d like to assist it if

those who may be temporarily depressed in remarks concerning indiscriminate charity. I believe that most people are willing to help their circumstances, and who require more or less subs antial help. society of this sorr, which undertakes to do is level best to avoid that evil and ta help proportionately those whose needs stands revealed to those who are searching into the matter, avoids the evil, and does very substantial good. I believe that the more the work of the society is known, the more it will commend itself to the general support of the community. It is not always a good thing to have a very large balance in a benevolent
society. People are apt to say the socie y is too well off, already and it is not for them to put their hand into their pocket. But when the income falls far below the expendi ture as it has done this year, there is very good cause for appeal. I venture to think that if the facts could be put in a very compact form, and sent to those who personally are not subscri bers, with an appeal for them to do their best to stop indiscriminate charity there would be a very considerable response in the way of sub- scribers to the society, that would put it on a gond basis even more so thun at present, When we speak of the work of the society we really mean the working cemitter, and Hong. kong is greatly indebted to ose ladies, as well as to the reverend gentlemen, of whom we might mention Mr. France and Mr. Wright (applause). I am sure we are very glad to see Mr, France back again at his post. Thanks are also due to the ladies, who from time in time investigate as far as possible the cases that are submitted. The whole community is. indebted to these ladies and it gives one the greatest pleasure in proposing the reception and adoption of this report.

I was looking, the other day, through the original list of the Coinmillee when the Society was formed, in September, 1879, and I see that none of those 12 ladies are at presentin the Colony, so very changing is the society here. Simson, through his solicitar, Mr. H. K Holmes, sued Capt. Gostche for $211, amount lost by reason of the furniture being sold at auction.
