THE CHINESE ÎN AMERICA.
Rather an interesting quest on at the present moment, when the Chinese and Americans are so interested in each other, is, di' the Chinese discover America? The claims of Columbus to be the discoverer of the Western World has been several times-disputed, The Norweigans assert that "Eri' the Red" landed in America five centuries before the great Spaniard sighted the unknown land. The French say that Jean Cousin discovered the Amazon long before Columbus, but now we learn that the Chinese Claim to have discovered America. The chief grounds on which this contention is based is
that the languages of the red north-American Indian, and the Chinese are so much alike. One authey says?—
There can be no manne: of could that there is very close relationship between the Indian dialects and the Chinese language; the resem blance between a large number of words is very striking, and they are alike in their structure, which is monosyllabic, On the other hand, a kind of physicalsilently proves that the Mexican Indians and the Chinese belong to the same Mongol race. The writer says that when he saw the Indians at Quadra, et-Vancouver for the first time he was unable to distinguish them from, Chinese and be spoke to them in the language of the Celestial Empire. Chirese women are so well aware of this resemblance that they disguise them, selves ns-Indians in order the more easily to gain admittance into the State of Washing-

YARN MARKET,
Messrs. Cawasjee Pallanjee & Co... in their report dated 15th inst, write as follows:-
The chief factor that has almost rule our Yarn Market during the fortnight has been the fluctuations in the rate of Exchange on Inaia. Soon after the departure of the last mail a higher tendency in the rupee rate set in which caused a great deal of impatience amongst most of the importers to realize for the goods in their bands. Prices, in consequence, gave way from o'e to three dollars per bale on last mail's, quotations with out leading to any important business. The Chinese dealers as well as speculators, under the impression of a further rise in the rate of exchange and a decline in the prices of yarn, kept themselves aloof and made pur hases for their actual requirements only. The market closes unsteady A very limited business; transpired in No. 205 at a decline of $1 to $3 per bale; dearer productions are difficult of sale. Only two chops of No. 165 changed hands; others are not in much request. No..12f has also suffered a decline and a moderate business is reported. As usual No. 1os, moved to a fair extent at declining rates. Nos 8s and 6s are out of favour, Sales during the fortnight comi prise of about 1,475 bales of No. 1 s 200 bales of No. 165, and 400 bates of No. 70s; in all about 2,150 bales.
