The Orient, with its warmth, its colouring, its scenic splendour and display, antiquity, its legends and its weath of poetic association, appeals strongly to the imagination, and reason is sometimes entrapped all unawares by the imagery of this glowing East rising in just indignation to avenge its real or fancied wrongs at the hands of an unsympathetic and oppressing Occident, and we are warned that there is at this very time a secret but none the less real and serious combination of forces in process which aims at the final and complete overthrow of Western supremacy, and the revival of Oriental Power. The subject, says a writer in the Singapore Free Press, is one on which elaquence--may-well-thrive and rhetoric and metaphor was strong; but argument needs something more than poetic ideal to feed on, and the theory of a detached and individual Orient has, if we mistake not, no substantial foundation. The qualities which caused the East to slowly and surely fall a victim to Occidental conquest or intrusión, are still rife,

Lack of cohesion and absence of ideal- are two of the most prominent of these missing qualifications, the one being in large measure dependent on the other. The Occident has for ever a standard of ideal before it for attainment, which is continually adjusting itself to modern requirements and all sorts and conditions of men direct their whole energies to competing for the nearest possible approach to these ideals, whether it be în religion, art, science or commercial supremacy. The Orient, on the other hand, keep their eyes on a fixed and unalterable standard in the far distant past and altogether out of harmony with their present life. The inevitable result of this is that the more enlightened quickly recognise the discrepancy, and casting off from the Inadequate past have nothing else to lay hold on, and the element of unity and foundation of strength is at once destroyed. Japan may be said to have reversed the Oriental attitude, and As a nation to have performed' a volls face using her past merely as a stepping stone for her future.
