They do this by inserting foreign substances, frequently in the form of josses, which the animal, to protect itself, covers with sacre. There are many families of Chinese who live and die in punts or barges moored in the rivers or cavals, and some of them completely sup port themselves by laying these shells, after they are charged, on the river-bottom under- neath where they live.
