We gather from the report given by our Osaka contemporary of Mr. Sakurai's views, that the Government hope to make Kobe one of the greatest trade centres in the Far East, in an- ticipation of the opening of the Panama Canal, That a waterway ncross the Isthmus will affect Sand probably alter the great steamship routes between the old and new worlds, in other words between Asia and Europe, goes without saying. And this change will necessarily affect the position of the ports in Japan. It behoves the citizens of this port to keep their eyes open # to the altered and altering conditions. If they
