THE SUPAO CASE,

TYPICAL CHINUSE PROCEDURE,

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH THURSDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1903.

According to Dr. Grenfell these sayings

formed the new gospel which is traditionally associated with St. Thomas,

An interesting variation of the gospel accord- The Supao case bids fair to become a voring to St. Luke, eleventh chapter and fifty table came celebre in the criminal' annals of second verse: Wos unto you lawyers, for ye these settlements and the ways, that are dark have taken away the key of knowledge; yet of the heathen John could not have been bet-entered net in yourselves and them that were ter exemplified than in the Intest deadlock entering in ye bindered," reads in the papyrus, which occurred yesterday.

"Ye have hidden the key of knowledge, ye entered not yourselves and to them that were

Another fragment contained a discourse of Christ closely related to passages of the sermon on the mount and a conversation between Christ and his disciples, in which Christ answers a question as to when his kingdom will be realized, saying:

"When yo return to the state of innocence which existed before the fall*

It will be remembered that at the conclusion of the proceedings against the twn pamphle-entering in ye did not open leers the other day, the Chihsien banded to Mr. Giles what appeared to be his written -judgment in those two cases; of course the only construction that can possibly be put on this, is that the. Chihsien had committed his views to writing for Mr. Giles' consideration and subsequent acquiescence or otherwise. But great was the amaxement of the Counsel engaged in the defence of the prisoners, when A valuable find was made, written in Latin. they received only yesterday, through the giving the text of the epistles to the Hebrews Mixed Court Magistrale, the Gailisien's and epitome of ivy's six lost books. This, ergrossed judgment not only in the cases with other papyri, covering the period 150-137 above alluded to but also in that of the man B. C., threw muchi new and valuable light on who was charged with attempted rebellion, the history of the world and marked the Throu, Ir the courtesy of Mi. Francis Ellis (of recovery of hitherto classical literature of the firm of Messrs. Brawelt and Ellis) we were Egypt. A quaint instance of the business able to obtain the gist of the judgment but me hode in vague in 13 1 C, is shown in the unfortunately to late for pull cation in our discovery of an amusing contract hereby a last night's issue. Shortly, the Chibsien's judg-slave boy was to be taught shorthand for 120 ment is in the effect that he considered that the three men, who were on the staff of the Supao, had suffered sufficient punishment by the long imprisonment they had undergone and that they should therefore be discharged, but Lung Chih-tze, who was charged with attempted rebellion,, was to remain la custody until further instructions had been received from Chang Chih-Tung, now in Pekin. As regarded the young man who admitted writing the pamphlet, and the school teacher, and erstwhile journalist, who wrote the open letter to Kang Yu Wei in Singapore, be judged them

guilty of seditious writing. According to Chinese law their sentence should be instant decapitation but considering the fact that the Empress Dowager bad just completed her three score and ten, he had decided to take a more lenient view of their case hy sentencing them to penal servitude for life!

The next phase of this extraordinary da nouncement was the receipt by Counsel of a. communication from Mr. B. Giles, the British Assessor, stating that he had received the Chihsien's judgment and that he understood that copies of same had a'so been forwarded to Counsel on both sides, Mr. Giles added what would doubtless be received with general satis faction that, as he had explained in the coursa of the proceedings, ne judgment could be rendered by the Magistrate without the full concurrence of the Assessor, and that he had never agreed to the judgment passed by the Chibsien, but on the contrary. he had most emphatically protested against it. The Judg ment was therefore null and void and that he had sent a communication to that effect to the Mixed Court Magistrate.

drachmae The payment was arranged on a thoroughly businesslike basis, 40 drachmae down, 40 on satisfactory evidence of progress and 40 on the attainment of proficiency-S. F. Chronicle.

PRONUNCIATION OF SOME WORDS. IN ENGLAND,

V

We usually laugh at the foreigner's efforts to master the pronunciation of our mother lon ̧ue, but most of us are not withou: doubt when we come to pronounce certain proper nouns. Any

number of surnames and geographical names receive as many as four different renderings, and it is quite possible to persuade any one that his or her way is not the correct one. Some surnames are so maltreated, as to be quite unrecognizable from the spelling. No wonder the average individual finds an Eng. lish dictionary indispensable.

Probably the most remarkable quartet are Colquhoun, Marjoribanks, Cholmondeley and Bagehot. They look much less impressive when spelled as pronounced-Cohoon, Marsh. banks Chumley and Bajar. Phonetic spelling deprives many names of their terrors. That awful name Geoghegan would become simply Gagan; Ruthven would be River, and Cock-

A CONTENTED SWOMAN. **Asida from form or features, she has attractiveness all her own. The bloom on her cheek, the elasticity in her step, the ring of her voice, her enjoyment of life-all these are magnets which draw others to her side. Wonderful and valuable as it is, health is not so difficult a thing to obtain as some dis couraged ones think. Most of the troubles of women arise from impure blood, impaired nutrition, low vitality and general debility CABLE ADDRESS-Telegraph, Hongkong, Modern science furnishes the most successful of remedies for these conditions namely

WAMPOLE'S PREPARATION. It is palatabic as honey and contains the nutritive and curative properties of Pure Cod Liver Oil, extracted by us, from fresh cod livers, combined with the Compound Symp of Hypophosphites and the Extracts of Malt and Wild Cherry, Taken before meals it improves the appetite, makes fat, restores vitality, enriches the blood and cures those weaknesses peculiar to the sex, which are the seat of their troubles. It is a blessing to Tired Wives, Nursing Mathers and Girls growing into womanhood. It colours the pale faces and rounds out the hollow chests. In a word, it nourishes and develops the entire body, and brings happy surprises to feeble, hopeless and discouraged sufferers. Dr. E. J. Boyes says: I have found it a preparation of great merit in a recent case a patient gained nearly twenty pounds in two months' treat- ment, in which it was the principal remedial agent." It is the typical medicinal success of our age, for time has proved our claims are supported by results, and a remedy which acta' in harmony with nature's own, efforts and processes. NOTE

ENTIRELY.

Some people are my h annoyed if they are not addressed in their own sp cial way. Mr. St John likes to be called Sinjh, but as a geographical term he does no mind you saying Saint John. Anstruther is doubtful, but often shortens into Anster. The Macs" also are very susceptible regarding their sur; names. If you want to be friends with McLeod and Maclean, call them Makloud and Maklane, and if you have intentions regarding Mr. Strachan's daughter, don't call him Strakan if you value your chances, but Strawn. Follow- ing these good intentions, you must address GREAT Beauclerk as Bepuclare and Beauvoir as Beever.

rendering of the nyme of the eminent com- poser of wal zes. Markyarvelee will be as near as you can get to Machiavelli, but pos- sibly you may be able to avoid this d's. tinguished personage.

Now it would be idle to speculate for & moment that the Chihsien, was probably ignorant of Mr. Giles' locus stondi, as the tribunal was a especially constituted one after - months and months of negotiations between the Corps Diplomatique and the Waiwupu. On the face of it, it would be perfectly absurd io contend for a moment that the Chihaien In case you ever move in, embassadorial might have been given a free hand in dealing circles or make friends on the Rivics, don't with the prisoners, in which case nothing could forget the Baron de Longueville is called have prevented him from sentencing the pri- Loneveal. We must therefore take it for granted that the powers of the Magistrate as well as that of the Assessor had been clearly defined in Peking in at least one essential `point-that no judgment could be held valid unless with the full concurreare of Mr. Giles. Such being the case the extraordinary line of action taken by the Chihsien is capable of only one construction. NEW LIGHT ON JESUS SAYINGS

INTERESTINO DISCOVERY MADE BY, SCIENTISTS NEAR CAIRO.

Many hitherto unknown sayings of Jesus Christ have been discovered in Egypt by archaeologists, who have dug up papyri buried alace the second century, too miles south of Cairo. Dr. Bernard P. Grenfell, who has been engaged in Fgyptian, excavations since 1894, at the general meeting of the Egypt exploration fund held recently, gays, the following details: Accompanied by Dr. Hunt, Dr. Grenfell found a rich Ptolomals necropolis at El Hibeb. The bulk of the documents from the one mound consisted of a collection of sayings of Jesus. They are all introduced with the words, "Jasus math and for the most part are now. The ends of the lines, unfortunately, are often obliterated Apparently all the sayings were addressed to St. Thomas, One of the most

Thomas remarkabló is:

"Let out him that seeketh cease from his search until he finds, and when he Ands he shall wonders wondering he sball reach the kingdom, 1e, the kingdom of heaven, and when he reaches the kingdom he shall have rest:"

Dr. Grenfell remarked that enormous interest would be also aroused by the discoveries on account of the variations they disclosed from accepted texts.

One variant of mystical saying, recorded in St. Luke, The kingdom of God is with you," was of great value, as the saying in the papyrus appeared in quite different surroundings from those attributed to it by the evangelist and extended far into another region,

A couple of "Shints" are rather puzzling, St. Clair should be rendered Sinclair, and if you would win a smile of "pproval pronounce St Leger Sellinger or Selleger,

"Desquestes is not so difficċit as it looks. Dekane would pars muster, and you may also come acro Hekano Regarding Charteris and Sandys, you will win approval in high society if you stick to Charters and Sands; and those individuals known as Jervis, Berkeley and Derby like to hear the first turned into "ah Why, it is difficult to say.

Spare a Welshman's fealings by saying Aber ganny, and not Abergavenny, and, if possible, don't attempt to pronounce Amwich. If you are English It is beyond you. A fairly suc. cessful way is to start with "Am" and leave the rest to luck

If you are going to Dolgelly for your holt- days, ask for a ticket to Dolgetbly; and if you are a cyclist, don't Inquire the way to Llanelly, If you do, you will probably never get there. The rustic would "bite" at Llanethly, however, Don't think of some diminutivo maiden when you speak of Wemyss ; call it Weems and you may be taken for a Scotchman; and if you are over the border, don't forget that Kirkcudbright is pronounced Kurcoobres.

Tho celebrated. news agency is called Rolter's not Rooter's; and the produce of five flager exercises for budding musicians Cerny is called Cherose. That famous It liau, Boccaccio, was simply known as Bok-kart che, not half so disturbing as the number of "os" would suggest-Ex,
