It is well- known that coal kept exposed to the air dele- riorales to a great extent, and this is not surprising when we consider the conditions under which most of our coal-fields were formed. the coal seems to be to drive off the less valuable gases, replacing them with a certain preparation of uncombined oxygen. The coal most favoured in the British Navy is a mixture of two thirds of Welsh and one third North country and a ton of this fuel is estimated to fill about forty cubic feet of space. To the uninitiated, it seems rather a paradox that water should improve the burning properties of coal; fire and water always having been looked upon as distinctly antagonistic to one another. Yet the chemist will tell us that there is hardly a flame that we use that does not owe its very existence to the presence of water actually manufactured during the process of burning-Contributed.
