CABLE ABSORBS INTEREST.
SOME LINKS OF THE TRANS PACIFIC LINE
FOR THE FIRST MESSAGE.
· There are some highly interesting facts con- nected with the opening of the Commerical Pacific cable, from San Francisco to Manila, on July 4, which, notwithstanding, the vast amount of matter already published, have either escaped attention allogether or have been'passed with a mere mention, There also are some important bits of electrical-informa tion with which the public is not familiar which had a bearing on the occurrence and which are absorbingly interesting.
The fact that the electrical current around the world consisted in part of two wires of the New York and New Jersey Telephone Com pany between the telephone building in New York City and that at Oyster Bay, where the President was staying at the time, seems to have escaped general attention. A part of the length of these wires, from New York to Jamaica, is underground, and in this portion of the circuit it was equipped with the Pupin coils, the right to which were recently "pr chased at a high price by the American Bell Telephone Company. These coils are no- thing more nor less than connections at points determined by a scientific law between the wires constituting a cable, and their pur pose is so to diffuse the fugitive currents which a wire constantly gathers from all sorts of

the principal conductor, a copper wire, about one-eighth of an inch in diameter. Surround- ing this centre is a tier of much smaller copper wires, lying lengthwise of the conductor a in perfect contact with it. This contact and the continuity of the smaller wires would maintain the circuit, even if the main conductor were broken. The whole filament of copper wires is enclosed in a mass of half vulcanized guita percha, which insulates them. The core, formed of gatta, perchn and copper wires, is covered with jute yarn to serve 45 cushion between the core and the armour. The core, however, between the Armour cushion and the gulta. parcha is surround. ed by a belt of thin brass sheathing, to protect insulation from the teredo and other marine botes., It is a brass tape wound round and round the insulation. The armour consists of a tier of iron and, steel wires, lying length- wise of the cable, afmost in contact with each other, the only separation between them being. the preservative tape with which they are wound. Outside the whole is a thick winding of the same preservative material, the object of which is to prevent corrosion of the armour. The diameter of the deep sea portions of the cable is a little more than three-fourths of an inch. The shore sections are much stronger and heavier, to resist the force of the breakers and currents and the strain and wear on rocks and coral reefs.
·
The statistics of the construction of the cable are by no means dry reading. The total

A CONTENTED WOMAN: Aside from Tonn or. features, she has an attractiveness all her own. The bloom on her cheek, the elasticity in her step, the ring
voice her enjoyment of life, all the of her magnets which draw others to her side. Wonderful and valuable as it is, health is not so difficult a thing to obtain as some dis- couraged ones think. Most of the troubles of women arise from impure blood, impaired nutrition, low vitality and general debility. Modern science furnishes the most successful of remedies for these conditions—namely
WAMPOLE'S PREPARATION.
It is palatable as honey and contains th nutritive and curative properties of Pure Cod Liver Oil, extracted by us from fresh cod livers, combined with the Compound Syrup of Hypophosphites and the Extracts of Malt and Wild Cherry. Taken before meals it improves the appetite, makes fat, restores vitality, enriches the blood and cures those wraknesses peculiar to the sex, which are the fir6ze seat of their troubles. It is a blessing to Tired Wives, Nursing Mothers and Girls growing into womanhood. It colours the pale faces and rounds out the hollow chests. In a word, it nourishes and develops the entire body, and brings happy surprises to feeble, hopeless and discouraged sufferers. Dr. E. J. Boyes says: "I have found it a preparation of great merit In a recent case a patient gained
ment, in which it was the principal remedial agent." It is the typical medicinal success of our age, for time has proved our claims are supported by results, and a remedy which acts in harmony with nature's own efforts and processes. No demand has been made upon it for relief and cure, that has not met with instant

NOTICE TO CONSIGNEES.
Another interesting fact in connection with' this part of the circuit was also disclosed by James M. Bigler, the line foreman of the telephone company, who was in charge of the switchboard at the Oyster Bay exchange, where THE Steamship
the telephone wires were plugged into circuit with the special wires to the Presidential offices, Mr. Bigler said:"
"These two wires have been kept absolutely clear for the Oyster Bay-San Francisco circuit, but the sending of the messages around the world would not have been retarded or interrupted in the least if we had been talking over the same wires all the while be- tween Oyster Bay and New York. In fact, the wires might have been carrying duplex, triplex and quadruplex telegraphic messages, and have | been used for the transmission of speech at the same time without the slightest disturbance of any of the three, four or five lines of communi- cation over them."
In fact, within ten minutes after the last cable message was sent from Oyster Bay, the news. paper men were using these same wires for forwarding their accounts of the opening of the cable to their offices by telephone.
One of the most interesting portions of the land line through which the messages around "the world passed was a cans of relics of former great steps in electrical progress and develop. ment which was in the operating room of the Postal Telegraph and Cable Company, New York City. This case contained, connected by a slender copper wire, which was a part of the Oyster Bay-San Francisco circuit, a section of the wire over which Professor S. F. B. Morse sent the first message by Morse tele- graph. This relic, was presented to William J. Hammer, consulting electrical engineer, who owns the case and its contents, by a son of Alfred Vail, Mr. Morse's partner in 1893. The second relic was a section
of the wire over which Professor Alexander Graham Bell and T. A. Watson, his assistant, experimented in the transmission of audible speech from 1875 to 1877 at No. 5 Exeter Place, Boston. It was presented to Mr. Hammer on on February 22, 1894.
The third relic is a section of the Atlantic cable over which the first message under the ocean was sent. It was given Mr. Hammer in 1880 by Cyrus W. Field.
In the centre of the case is an electric safety plug or fuse, used in London on January 12, 1882, to connect the first incandescent lamp ever lit from an electric lighting central station. It was the invention of Thomas A. Edison, and
