JE GRANDEUR OF MELODY.

(DY A BANKER.)

Probably the most sublime and magnificent concerted music ever heard of this earth is the rendering of Handels oratorios at the triennial festival (as recently held) by the chair of about four thousand voices and intruments at the Crystal Palace.

The thae-honoured National Anthem having been, sung, after a few recitatives the double choruses of "Israel in Egypt" are thundered out-He-spake the word, and there came flies, and lice in all their quarters." The entire vast orchestra seems to be enveloped in 4 'swarm of buzz'ng, stinging insects, accom- panied by the stridulous burring of the wings of hordes of locusts; while a shudder seems

to pass over flic thousands of vocalists as they biss out the recit:) of the crawling irruption of the noisome vermin.

GOVERNMENT NOTIFICATION. NFORMATION has been received from the Military Authorities that GUN PRACTICE at a target will be carried out from Stone-

Government Boards, also to give the Chief of R. GEORGE ECKLEY, has been ap-cutters' Island on September and, 1903, com-

Police who carried out his orders a civil ap paintment. Prince Chingist à recent audience protested very strongly against auch an unwise policy, but his petition was received in strong silence and he was permitted to rise from his knees and go away without any indication that his words had had any effect. That the protest was useless and that the Imperial mind is reso- lutely fixed upon a re, kless 'course may be

inferred from the for her report that another list of reformers or so-called secret society men has been sent out from the Palace, while tele And then-" He gave them hilst nes for grans, have been despatched in all directions rain." Fist one side of the orchestra, alone, ordering the immediate arrest of all the 40 men then the other side, sing out the graphic nar- mentioned therein. In addition, offers of rank ration, and then, in a moment, with a mighty have been made to those arresting any promi- food of pulsating melody, every voice, every nent reformers, and promises of restored rank instrument, unites with the great organ, the and position to degraded officials for the shine deep roil and aile of drums, and the blasts of service. Added to all this comes a repon trumpets, in thundering out, with startling re-

which has unfo tunately a strong smack of sonance, the recital of the awful plague probability about it, namely, that in future no Fire, fire, ran along the ground, fire, mingled Cantonese, Fakienėse, Hananese or other v. with the hail, ran along the ground." Andriety of Southerner shall receive either ap oint- ment or promotion. If this is true it is virtually the South thrown down by the North, and if the South takes it up woe betide China. Who can blame the South if it does! must say my sympathies are wholly Chinese as distinct from the 'Manchu and Northerner. It may be a blow aimed by his enemies' ni Viceroy. Yuan Shi-kai who has surrounded himself with shrewd Cantonese officials, and marked himself as suspicious in consequence.

now, after the Egypting host has perished in

the Red Sea, comes the pan of triumph, the exultant chaunt of poise for deliverance and for victory. "ile back inumphed gloiously; the horse and his rider bath. He thrown into the sea; the Lord shall reign for ever and ever"; the entire Trumpet-tongued orchestra pealing forth the stately and angust strains of that majestic psalmedy and magnificent anthem of thanksgiving,

But of all the choruses, the "Hallelujah," from the "The Messinh" is by far the most franscendently sublime And truly it must be beyond measure the finest and most reverem and triumphant essay to render adoration to the Elemal which mortal man can ever have attempted. Who can hear the Hallelujah chorus sung by several thousands of voices, accompanied by hundreds of performers on all kinds of instrur eats, without a very thrill of rapt emotion coursing through his veins, or without experiencing a throb of enraptured soul-stirring ardour. And as the echoes of the glorious harmony resounil in all their bewilder ing magnificence, and the jubilant hosannahs rend the air in a pealing diapason of solenih majesty, the spell-bound hearers must realize, though but faintly and imperfectly, that if frail man can pio uce such seraphic harmony, the music of the choirs of heaven must indeed be glorious and sublime.

And we come away from the wonderful ner. formance, with the strains of the "passion" choruses still singing in our cars-With Dis stripes we are healed," "The Lood hath lid on Him the iniquity of us all and all those ather plaintive and tarful numbets describing the sufferings of the Sayi ne au our behalf, we must, unless indeed we have a heat of stone, feel that we must then and there fall at His feet and proffer the love and the ardet adora. tion of our heart.

August rich. The Empress Dowager has endeavoured to stup gossip by the issue of a popular leader refusing any honorific characters on the occa.. sion of her birthday, as the selection of two more to add to the sixteen she already possesses was under discussion. Each character repre sents an annual income of Tls. 360,000, the edict therefore saves officials Tis. 720,000 £ year; but it does more, it turns public opinion which had been boiling over with indignation back into the grove of thinking the Empress Dowager is not such a bad sort after all. While thus soothing suspicion to rest she and ber crew are carefully prosecuting the anti progressive crusarie, and a veritable time of terror has been introduced by the offer of 3rd class metropolitan rank to any one who will arrest any prominent reform leaders, or the recovery of forfeited rauk to those who arrest a particularly notorious and fauential man. It will be seen at once that such an offer, though it has only been unofficially notified, will set every man spying on his neighbour, afford boundless opportunity for personal animosity and jealousy to have full play, and for bribery and extortion to reap a rich harvest, and it is to be feared a very great number of unjust arrests will be made. Mea while the luckless first graduate at the recent exams, Liang Tze-yi, who is accused, or at least suspected, of being a Wel connection of Leang Chi-chow, the Kang party journalist who had a paper in Japan, is in prison and has already lost all his scholarly mank. It is uncertain yet what will be done with bim, Report is now trying to make out that Shen, when he was being tortured, gave the names of a number of his compatriots who were
