COLD STORAGE CO, LD.

As will be seen from the prospectus we print below, the monopoly hitherto enjoyed by the Hongkong Ice Co., Ld., in the manufacture of ice in the Colony and as sale in Hongkong and the Coast Ports appears to be threatened by a new company to be formed with a capital of half a million dollars and to be styled the Hongkong-Canton ice and Cold Storage Co., Ld The prospectus is as follows-

The object of this enterprise is the establish- ing of two factories for the manufacture of ice one in Hongkong, and one in Canton,

"The Viceroy has obtained from the Peking Government Tls. 800,000 and thiny regiments of five hundred men each (15,000, troop) by simply asking for them, whereas Governor Wang, in spite of urgent prayers and repeated reports, could get neither men nor money from the Central Government.

"Governor Wang, though degraded, is still at Kweilin where he is awaiting the arrival of his successor in order to hand over the seals of office,"

He also referred to the currency question in other Countries around us. Since then the

We estimate the profit on one ton of ice at the present price to be not less than $30.00.

In Canton we hope to have an absolute monopoly, as is out of the question to ship Atice from Hongkong, store it, and pay freight and commission, as cheaply as we can manu- facture it on the spot. Furthermore the Canton plant will supply its share of steamers, as well as selling to the adjacent towrs of Fa Ti, HP Nam, Fat Shan, Sam Shui, Wu Chow, and other towns on the West River, (Macao will be supplied from our Hongkong plant).

It should be remembered that the Canton Hankow Railway is pushing its line rapidly, and this opens another avenue for the dis position of the Canton plant.

Under the adminis iration of M. Doumer similar projects were on several occasions discussed in the Conseil Supérieur of Indo-China, but no progress was made with them. This time it is expected that the Minister for the Colonies will at least authorize the experiment frequently advo rated by the Indo-Chinese chambers of com. merce and of agriculture. True is it that when the conference came to an end on the 14th July most of the visiting officials left for Moscow in a state of exultation over Russia's increasing power in Manchuria, and scoffed at the idea of any backward step being taken. However, a straw shows the direction of the wind, and the latest appointment of a viceroy in the Far East with supreme power indicates Russia's determination not only to dominate Manchuria but is herself “step by step absorbing that province and stretching out her tentacles in Mongolia and other regions as well."
