THE FILIPINO MIDGETS.

When Tsen Chun Usuen was on his way from Szechuen to Canton, he arranged with Toan Fang, the acting viceroy of Hu Kuang, to send him the eight regiments in question, and subsequently he applied to the Throne for permission, which was ob tained, to carry the arrangements with effect

EXCHANGE IN BANGKOK. It will be remembered that at the beginning of May the Government reduced its balances with the three Exchange Banks in. Bangkok, the amount withdrawn being upwards of ticais 1,500,000. This was done with the view of strengthening exchange. But since then the balances of 100,00 or 500,00 ticals left with each Bank have been allowed to increase again, and, according to the local Times of 4th inst, instructions have raw been given by H, R. H. the Minister of Finane to bring the balances down once more. There will be over ticals 1,003,000 to withdraw this time, and in view of the fact that a good deal of paddy is now arriv. ing in Bangkok it is hoed exchange may be appreciably strengthened.

In taking over the money the Government propose to follow the same course as on the last occasion, when the money was not tested on being handed over Instead each Bak deposited the money it returned in a room at the Treasury, which was locked by an offi cial of the Bank, the Bank being prepared to take the money back in the same way without testing. This method has the advantage of saving a good deal of time,

RE-MODELLING

THE "SHAI MUT" AND THE“ TREMONT,”

The contract for re-modelling the giant freightex Showmut and Tremand, of the Boston Steamship Company's Alret, into passenger steamers, which has been awarded to Moran Bros,, is a work of considerable magnitude, and will result in placing upon the Pacific waters, with headquarters at Seattle, two steamships that will stand comparison in every way with the great trans-Atlantic liners, and with the big mail boals now plying between America and the Orient. The vessels were taken to the Meran shipyard July 1st, and are expected to appear on the water again in their new form about the middle of August.

The Shawmut and Tremont are 505 feet in length and 58 feet beam, and carry oppo close tons cach. They have been use. porting freight between Seattle and China, Japan and the Philippines. When 'converted into passenger transports they will be retained on this route, and will be used by the Govern. ment in carrying troops between this port and Manila,
