The Death of the Pope.

The Pope's death was preceded by a short struggle after which he fell into a pro- found lethargy passing away calmly while the Cardinals and Dignataries, kneeling and weeping, recited the prayers for the dying s the Grand Penitentiary then recited the "prayer for the dead and sixty Cardinals and Dignataries defiled past the corpse kissing the hands. The body clad in white, with
the face veiled, rests on a bed.
Cardinal Luigi, Oreglia di Santo Stephano, as Cardinal Camerlengo, has assumed the official direction of the Vatican, Cardinal Rampolla immediately ceasing to act as Secretary of State.

The body of the late Pope will be em- balmed and removed to-morrow to St. Peler's where it will lie in State. The Italian Gov- ernment is arranging admirably for the maintenance of order.

Peking, July 13th Russia has decided to prepare for energencies as a result of the Port Arthur conference, and two Divisions of Cossacks are now being mobilised in the Don districts. These men are now being sent to Tsitka and Hailar. The force is expected to act as a rearguard in case of war. The Russian authorities have issued an order for mobilisation in Manchuria and the order is already being carried out in Kirin province. An inkao despatch gives the number to be mobilised in Manchuria at 103,000.
The Chinese Minister to St. Petersburg wires to Prince Ching that, M. Lamsdorff told the Minister that he had nothing to do with the evacuation of Manchuria, and that everything was in the hands of. General Kuropatkin at Port Arthur. The Minister further stated in the despatch that there is much excitement in
diplomatic circles, in anticipation of war with Japan.
General Kuropatkin and the Aide-de-camp of the Czar will set out for Europe to-morrow. marinichi.

JAPAN IS PREPARED
TO GO TO WAR,

On the same day the Prince received message from Tsai Chen, the Chinese Minister at Tokio, which stated that, owing to the resig nation of the Premier, Jazán has not yet decided on her policy regarding Manchuria. The Prince was worried at the news, as he found he could no longer rely on Japan.
The Prince, however, deputed Tao Taotai to call on the Japanese legation to ascertain the real atitude of Japan.
In spite of his indisposition on that day, Mr. Uchida, received Tao Taotai and gave him assurances that Japani would be quite prepared to go to war, if necessary, with Russia provided China would not be hypnotised to sign the secret treaty.

The Ji Jih professes to have a special telegram from Yinkow to the effect that the Russian Minister has intimated to the Russian merchants in Newchwang and Port Arthur that war is probably imminent and that it would be expedient for them to go home within a certain date. We have not been able to substantiate this report locally, but it is not necessarily

IMMICHANT VESSEL, INFECTED
The British steamer Cheung Chew arrived at Singapore from Amoy and Swatow on the 4th inst, with, 866 Chinese immigrants, men, women and children on board. The majority of the immigrants were for that port, and a few were for Penang. It is understood (says the Straits Times of 15th inst) that during the voyage down ten Chinese died of plague. On the arrival of the vessel here she was quaran. tined, and the Chinese were alf landed at the quarantine camp at St. John's Island, where every precaution was taken to prevent the spread of the plague. It is reported that from the time the immigrants were landed, tome thirty deaths from plague have occurred at St. John's. Several of the Chinese coolies attempted to escape from the island by swimming, but it is understood that they were all captured and taken back. of the NORDDEUTSCHER LLOYD, having arrived, Consignees of Cargo are hereby informed that their Goods, with the exception. of Opium, Treasure and Valuables, are being landed and stored at their risk into the Godowns of the Hongkong and Kowloon Wharf and Godown Company, Limited, Kowloon, whence delivery may be obtained.
Optional Cargo will be forwarded unless notice to the contrary be given before 6 P.M., ' on the 2zed instant.
No Claims will be admitted after the Goods have left the Godowns, and all Goods remaining undelivered after the 29th instant will be subject to rent.
All broken, chafed, and damaged Goods are to be left in the Gadowns, where they will be examined on WEDNESDAY, the 29th instant, al 9.30 AM.
All Claims must reach us before the rst August, or they will not be recognized.
No Fire Insurance has been effected. Bills of Lading will be countersigned by the Undersigned.
