GLIMPSES OF CHINA.
SHANGHAL,
Shanghai is the most northerly of the five treaty posts on the south-east coast of China, and is situated at the junction of the rivers Hwang-po and Woosung, which flow into the Yangtze, in the province of Kiang-su,
The site upon which the present city now stands was occupied by a native town bearing the same name of Shanghai-which means "near the sea"-as early as the year 249 B.C., and Chinese records show that, from even as fur back as the ith century, it was of no little commercial importance, attaining in fact to the
rank of a city as early as the 11th century,
The port was opened to foreign trade in the year 1843, after some fighting between the British and Chinese force which took place the previous year. Two years later foreigners commenced to settle in the place and several houses and other baklings were erected by them, other Empean nations, of which the French were the most prominent, not being slow to follow our lead and to obtain conces. sions in the vicinity of the native town.
Sanghai is situated in a large and well watered plain shut in by fue hills on the west- ward side only. This plain is for the most part under cultivation, viče, nation, and grains being grown in large quantities, for the soil is extreme- ly rich, Cotton is, however, the principal crop, and the importance of the city may be said to depend to a large extent on its being situated at the outlet of the cotton-growing districts, for with the exception of silk and tea, cotton forms the staple article of expert of the place.
This Kiang-su plain is exceptionally fa voured in the way of communications by waler, for rivers and creeks intersect it in every direction, and by means of these the crops of cotton, grain, and vegetables, which are raised in abundance all over its area are carried with great facility to the city, whence they are exported on seagoing vessels to all parts of the world,
The variety of vegetables raised is very great, the Chinese excelling in this branch of cultiva tion; but besides vegetables, fruit, such as peaches, plums, strawberries, medlars, cherries. &c., are largely and sccessfully grown in the surrounding districts, while from further north, apples, pears, grapes, walnuts, and chestnuts, are brought down in large quantities. Flowers, too, both European and indigenous, are cul- tivated by the Chinese, and Bourish in the public and private gardiens of the various settle
ments.

away from the busier part of the town. The Bubbling Well Road is one of the most favourite situations, and after that the Sicawei and Sinza roads, along each of which are many of the finest mansions, enclosed in their own grounds. There are, moreover, several exion, sive avenues of handsome trees in the outskiris of the city, while within it are two or three small but well laid out public parks and gar- dens, notably those in the Briti h and American concessions.
The city is it throughout by electric light, for the supply of which there are no less than four Electric Light Companies established and doing a good business, one of these, it may be remarked, being the Chinese Electric Light
Company.
The supply of water was at first a consider able difficulty owing to the low and swampy nature of the ground, and the absence of bills in the proximity of the city. A system of fiber- ation has now, however, been introduced, by which the water abtrinable locally is renderedi potable, and an ample supply is now available,

There are many fine buildings throughout

It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings, its length being 152 feet, by 8 feet broad and 54 feet. high. There is also a Roman Catholic Cathedral in the French concession, as well as several other churches and chapels of the various denominations. The Shanghai Club is one of the largest and most commodious institutions of the kind in the East. The building itself is a handsome and well designed one, and it is favourably situated at one end of the English bundt cost T 120,000, or more than £10,000 sterling, and is said to have ruined three contractors in the course of building.

After the first occupation by the British, the trade of Shanghai increased slowly until the opening to the Yangtsze and the northern ports in 1861, when commerce received a great stimulus. This was enhanced by the opening up of Japan and by the adoption in that country of European methods and customs to such a large extent.

IT IS DIFFERENT NOW.
Once upon a time students of medicine held the notion that there were as many different diseases as the body has organs and parts; every one of these ailments requiring a different treatment. So stupid a mistake could lead only to miserable failures. For the fact is, the body is a single machine; and
what concerns one part of it concerns, more or less closely, all the rest. Thus we see how it happens that one remedy, ar mode of treat- a variety of ment, may relieve and cure complaints, or what may appear like a variety, but are really various forms or out- comings of the same cause. Take, for example, Anemia, Scrofula, Poverty of Blood, General Debility, Influenza, Throat and Lung Diseases, etc.-a formidable array indeed they look to be; ye!
A
WAMPOLE'S PREPARATION quickly abates the worst of such cases, and absolutely cures many which have been abandoned as hopeless. The reasons are: its power over the digestive and assimilating process, its action in expelling impurities from. the blood. and its consequent ability to vitalize

It was not dreamed out, or discovered by accident; it was studied out, on the solid principles of applied medical science It is precisely what it is said to be, and has won the confidence of the public on that basis. You may resort to it with a faith and hope that arise from the history of what it has done for others. Dr. Thos. Hunt Stucky says: "The continued use of it in my practice, convinces me that it is the most palatable, least nauseat-
ing, and best preparation now on the market! Every dose effective. "You cannot be dis- appointed in it." Sold by chemists here and throughout the world and A. S. Watson & Co., Limited.

The value of land in the neighbourhood of the city rose considerably in consequence of the expansion of trade, so that land in the various foreign concessions is at the present day worth from 15 to 20 times as much as at the time of the first occupation. These con cessions have also been greatly enlarged al- though not without considerable difficulty: for the Supreme Government at Peking has de- murred to every request made by the European and American communities at Shanghai, for an extension of the area originally granted to them. These extensions have, however, in . most cases been in the end tardily conceded, so that the total of the areas of foreign con- cessions in, or in the neighbourhood of the city, amount at the present day to some 6,000 acres. All ground belongs nominally to the Emperor of China and an annual rent is paid THE BANK OF SOUTH CHINA having
to him for it by the foreign residents.
Up to the year 1866 occasional risings and disturbances affected the progress of the port, and more than once these risings had to be re- pressed by force of arms. Of these the most Important was the Taiping rebellion which was not finally overcome until the year 1863, but from then until the present time no serious outbreaks have occurred. A British garrison was, however, maintained in Shanghai up to the year 1866. Each foreign community is re- presented by its own consul, and civil and criminal cases are tried in the consular courts. In other respects, as regards local affairs the residents govern themselves by means of the Municipal Council, which now consists of aine members of various nationalities, and this council is officially recognised by the Supreme Government and the diplomatic bodies at Pe king.
The streets of the European portions of the city are arranged for the most part at right angles and in a series of squares, on the American plan, and these streets which were originally narrow and inconvenient, as those of all Chinese towns are, have of late years been considerably widened, and the healthiness of the city considerably improved thereby. The roads and streets are well paved and well fighted, and in addition to those of the city proper, there are several good roads running out into the country, trees have been planted on either side of these roads so that they form pleasant routes for riding, driving, and walking The largest and most commodious residences *ofthe more wealthy inhabitants, both native and foreign, are now situated outside the city and
