*KAHUNAISM” IN HAWAIIAN ISLES.
STRANGE MIXTURE OF CRAFT AND CHRISTIANITY.
There has been another natbreak of kahun- aism in Hawaii with the result that one of the sorcerers, or kabunas, is in prision at Puna, Hawaii, awaiting trial on a charge of man- slaughter. Ile is charged with having caused
the death of an old native by beating him on
the head with a Bible in order to drive the
devils from his body.
THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH
SOME FEATURES OF CALCUTTA'S Į IRADE.
A number of interesting points relating to the commerce of Calcutta can be gleaned from: the dry and somewhat bulky Report on the Maritime Trade of Bengal. The aggreate sea- borne trade decreased by 3.3 per cent. during 1992-3, and as Calcutta absorbs 6.5 per cent. of the trade it is evident that the Capital has not had so prosperous a twelvemonths as in the preceding year. As a matter of fact, it has been going down hill since 1900-1901, this year's decrease bring 2.68 mainly in foreign irade" The falling off in imports was not very large but the amount would have been bigger had it not been for the Durbar, which was responsible for increase in jewellery, apparel and wines, and no doubt affected other items. Amongst other miscellaneous returns the de- cline of the importation of matches from the
This case is one of the most unique in the annals of kahunism in the islands. It appears from the ste y told at the trial in the District Court that a cative in the Puna district became ill-and the Government physician, Dr. Holland, was called in. He was treating the man with some hope of curing him, when the native call ed in a kabuna, believing that the physician was tot curing him, rapidly enough, The kahuna immediately threw away the remed-mineral oil decreased in volume and in value, ies prescribed by the physician and diag

was only Rs. 2,063,—whereas twenty years apr it was Rs. 323,294. Although the imports of

Russia's share fell 25 per cent, and was promessed of red, devils, and though there was a slight revival in the trade after several incantations, in which the aid with the United States, only one-eighth of of spirits was invited, decided that the only what was imported twelve years ago was re- way to drive out the devils was by liberal ap-reived. This d crease in the foreign trade is plication of the Bible to the head of the patient. due entirely to the competition of Burma. The sick man was compelled to sit upright in which supplies kerosine at the rate of two his bed and was ten benten vigorously by the million gallons a month. In sugar the effect Lahuna with a heavy volume of the sriptures. of the enhanced duties to meet the Karte! When the kahuna's arm tired the man's wife system was seen, the imports from Austria was forced to continue the treatment, until the Hungary and Germany falling by 75 and 74 man sank unconscious in bed. A few days per cent. respectively. afterward the man was beaten even more vigo- rously with the Bible and he died.
The kahuna was arrested, first on the charge of practising witchcraft, but afterward the charge was changed to manslaughter. The man made no defence. He said that he had done his best for his patient, but the devils had conquered. He testified that the man's eyes were red, that he was restless and that his hair stood on end, and these 'were signs that he had red devils. The only cure was by the application of the Bible to the head, is the Bible told.
The kahun was asked in point to the chap ter in the scriptures which provided for this method of getting rid of the devil, but he be- came confused and refused to do so. Judge Kamau then held the kahuna for the Grand Jury on the charge of manslaughter. The wife of the mon`admitted that she had beaten her husband over the head with the Bible, but said that she could not disobey the instructions of the kahuva, in whom she trusted implicitly

There is a growing demand for tobacco in cigarettes amongst the natives of India. Over fifteen lakhs were imported, this being an in.. crease of nearly to per cent and the trade has unlimited possibilities before it. The chief exports to foreign ports consist of jute, tea, apim, oil seeds, gain and pulse, and hides. and skins. The indigo industry was again depressed, the competition of synthetic indige being accentuated by a very anfavourable
season. The area planted was smaller, and exports declined by about 45 per cent. both in quantity and value. The shipments in fact were the smallest since 1878-79. The value of the jute trade receded 77 per cent., but as. that of the previous year was the highest recorded, the result is not altogether unsatis- factory. The amount of tea exported from Calcutta decreased, but the quantity sent out of the Presidency during the year was larger than in the preceding twelve months, Chitta. gong coming in for a much bigger share of the trade. The bulk of the shipments for Indian ports wrut to Bombay, whilst Sind took a good | sleal. Much of this teawas bought forthe Persian
market, but in view of the exterion graine in that country the future of the trade is far
is a relic of ancient Hawaii, and all the efforts | from promising. of the missionaries, from the day of their
arrival, have been insufficient to stamp it out.
It is witch-craft. pure and simple, but even some of the educated people among the Hawai- fans believe in it. There is something in it akin to the faith cure.
THE FOITER'S WHEEL.
THE Potter's Wheel is one of those imple. ments, like the Spade.
The younger element is growing up without fear of it, but among the older maliver it is estimated that there is one kahuna to every fifty people. For kahunaism is a lucrative business. An attempt was made at the last session of the Legislature to secure the repeal of the law prohibiting the practice of witch- craft, but it failed to ret through the Senate,, though all the natives voted for it. At the session just closed another effort to legalin the practice of the black an, though in a round about way, was made. A bill was introduced | always fired,
to permit the practice of medicine without a licence, which was meant for the. kahuna and no one else.
A few months ago a woman witch doctor in Lahoina on Maui was sent to prison for causing the death of a father and two sons who, she said, had killed the pet cat of her favourite niece. All three of the men became ill and the kahuna was called in to cure them. They died as a result of her treatment. She admit- ted that she practised kahunaism. She said that she did her best to save the lives of her patients, but their great sin in killing the cat had made cure impossible.
POWER OF THE KAHUNA.
The kahuna has of fate become somewhat modernized, or perhaps it is only that fakirs have replaced the real thing. Many of them are blackmailers pure and simple. They claim power to summon spirits at will, and unless they receive everything they want in the form of money or food, the credulous native is likely to suffer from their wiles. The kahunas claim
descent from the devil, and the principal theory of their practice is that all men are possessed of spirits which leave their bodies at night and pester other people, also that spirits of deceased relatives always return to earth. to inflict their presence upon people they have known is life. The kabuna for a small consideration kills these wandering spirits and permits the native to go in peace. Pige and white chickens must
