GREAT DOCK' SCHEME FÖR
BOMBAY,
We have already mentioned the great dock improvement schime, which the Bombay Part
Trust propore to commence work on as soon as the approval of the Government of India has *been obtained. The following details and dis-
cussion of the scheme are taken from recent proceedings at the meetings of the Trust.
THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, PRIDAY, MARCH 20, 1903.
testricting the dimensions to less than they now recommend.
e sr
The ar pr. ximate cost is estimated at Rs. 48 lakhs, including the dry dock, hydraulic machinery, three-floored sheds to each berth
excluding interest during construction, and ex. and including also engineering charges but cluding also the entrance channel. The channel is estimated to cost very approximate. Rs. 30 lakhs and could probably be carried out to the full depth gradually.
At a recent meeting of the Bumbay Party Trust the Ilirman, Mr. W. C. Hughes, said the business before the Committee was to con-
sider, and, if possible, decide on the general outlines of a si heme which the Baard can t advised in adopt provisionally with a view to detailed plans and estimates being prepared, He mentioned that the scheine involved the expenditure of large sums of money, the ap proximate estimate of the cost of a dick being 23 Laklis (exclusive of die chaquel and of int.rest during construction), but that, though this was, of course, n inatter for seri outs consideration, he might mention for coin- parissa that the new Kidderpore Docks at: Calcutta had cost kr. 349 lakhs, and that the Prince's and Victoria Docks together cost Rs. 22 Likhs in all,
The Commiu e proceeded to consider the following points:--The luculity forthe proposed extension; the Pimensions to be given to the new deck in respect of depth, lengili berths, and turning space.

JOTICE is hereby given in pursuance of Section 150 of the Companies Ordinance,

Queen's Buildings, 1865, that a GENERAL MEETING of the MEMBERS of the above-named Company Victoria, in the Colony of Hongkong, on THURSDAY, the NINTH DAY OF APRIL, 1903 at 12 o'clock NOON for the purpose of having an account laid before them, showing the The total expenditure, if these proposals are

THE BULK OIL INSTALLATION.
material excavated from the new dock.
The cost of such reclamation effected in this way would not exceed from Rs. 12 10 Rs. 15 per square yard, and the expenditure would be remunerative as an investment apart from the rents of the two existing installations, and the cost has not been included as part of the dock expenditure. On the expiry of their lease the Standard Oil Co would probably also have to move to this reclamation.
The new dry dock, it is proposed, shall be Boo feet in length. The only possible location for it appears to be adjacent to the main dock eritance, and its construction will involve the removal of the Bulk Oil Installation on Mady Bay South reclamation (Shell Transport and Trading Co.) It is proposed to make room for its removal and also for the similar installa tion on the North reclamation (Royal Dutch Petroleum Co.) by reclaiming the foreshore Mody Bay is now practically the only avail-south of the new dock up to the line of the able site, and this question resolves itself intrallard Pier. This can be effected with the whether the new dock shall be built in con- tinuation southwards of the Victoria Dock, as proposed in the scheine by Mr. Squire, generally approved in 1897, or whether it shall be located further to the south and be a separate independ. ent dock. The plans in this respect had previously been discussed by the Committee, and on the grounds that the displacement of the large nativet ade now resort'ng to Carnac and Mody Bunders is most undesirable, it being now suitably located in touch with the native town that basins to the south to replace. these bunders woul! be not nearly so con venient in this respect; that they would take time and cost a large sum to const uct, and that the boat traffic, in and out, would neces- sarily cross the south entrance channel to the new dock seriously hampering navigation, and that there is no practical advantage in marking the new dock to communicate with the present docks, the Committee unanimously adhered to the decision previously arrived at that the separate independent dock, with entrance from the south, leaving the Carnac and Mody Bunder'traffic undisturbed, should be adopted in preference in the alternative.

the matter, and am now to say that the mitire and by Members specially i terested in CAMPBELL, MOORE & CO., LIMITED, opinion in regard to theat is entirely favourable. The inadequacy of the prese & Dock accoin.
DI PIN OF THE DOCK. The most important consideration in this respect is the draft allowable for vessels pissing through the Suez Canal. The present minimum depth of the Canal is reported to be 9 metres (29) feet) and the projected depth: 91 (31 feet inches). The present allowable draft in the Canal is 25 feet 3 inches. The deepest drafted vessel, which left Bombay in 1991-02, was drawing 28 feat. From the evidence given before e 1ondon l'ort Commission it appears that the White Star Line of steamers, trading to Australia, draw 328 feet when full laden.modation is already admitted on all sides, and The proposal by the Engineer is in fix tha sill of the new dock at R. T.. $oo, allowing for a draft of 3r feet. The approximate cost of deepening the wat dock one foot is estimated At Rs. 41 likhs, exclusive of the channel, or including the extra depth for the dry dock, Rs. 51 lakhs,
.
CAPACITY OF THE CANAL, Viewing the rapid advance now taking place in the size and draft of ships, it appears certain that the Suez Canal must be further deepened before very long. To the draft allowable for the passage of the Canal has to be added an allowance for coal to be consumed on the voyage outward from Bombay. Taking this into consideration, as well as the prospects of increase in drafi, and rememb.ring that it is very costly, if not practically impossible, to in craise the depth of docks of the proposed size after construction, the Committee are un- animously of opinion that the sill of the new dock should be fixed at R L 50'00 (bottom of dock R. 1. 47-00) allowing for a draftin entrance of 32 feet, at high water, ordinary neaptides. The Committee consider that the Trustees should provide facilities in this respect and in respect of length of vess Is well in advance of requirements, and the docks should be designed to allow the trade of Indin the full benefit of the great natural advantages of harbour in the matter of draft and size of ships.
GROWING LENGTH OF VESSELS.
It appears certain that the length of steamers engaged in the carrying trade with the East will largely increase, There has been a steady advance in the marimu v length of ships call ing here in the last ten years from 450 to 525 feet, and the increase is likely now to be more rapid. Steamers, 700 feet, long between per- pendiculars, are now being launched in Eng. land, and the latest type of try dock provides for a length of 800 to 850 feet. For these reasons the Committee recommend that the turning space in the new wet dock be not less than .3,500 by. 1,050 instead of 905 by 1,050, and that the central jetty be made 1,500 feet instead of 1,100 feet in length making the total length of the dock son feet more than shown on Plan D. Approximately the cost of addition is Rs. 30 lakbs, to which Re 19 lakhs should be added for additional sheds for the extra length of quay, but the Committee are unanimously of opinion for the reasons given in dealing with the draft to that the new dock should be in all respect: anticipated requirements taking would be as impossible dock of this kind Colt, and, taking-account "Elapse before tha vitiền Kro satisfied tras economy in APANESE BEER
so strongly o my Committee recognise the urgent need for such an extension as is now proposed, that they would even commend to the very serious consid, tation of your Board the propriety of ar anging for the completion of the work in a much shorter period than appears in de contemplated.
IMPROVEMENTS AT CALCUTTA.
The Governinent of India have sanctioned plans and estimates, amounting to four and a half lakhs of rupees, for the sheds which the Port Commissioners propose to build at berth No. 14 in the Tidal Basin of the Kidderpore Docks, for the purpose of equipping it for un as a berth for the shipment of produce.
Government have also sanctioned plans and estimates, amounting to Rs. 216,000, for the construction of an unport warehouse at the Jetties.
