Far East, and consequently a scene of no mean traffic, it has long since been abandoned for the southern passage through Singapore harbour. In width it varies from a'out a line to a little more than three furlongs, and be tween Woodlands, the northern terminus of the Singapore line, ea | Johofe Bahru, the capital of Johore, on the coast, almost facing Wood lands, it is proposed to establish communication by means of a fast steam ferry service. By this means such of Johore's produce as reaches the coast, after tedious process, will be quickly --forwarded to Singapore, the natural market for Jobore and the neighbouring States, and European goods destined for the country, unloaded at Singapore, will be sent on without loss of time.

The extensive country of Johore, embracing the entire southern end of the Malay Peninsula, is extremely rich in minerals, timber, and all kinds of jungle produce, but as yet the land is practically an undeveloped one. Governed by a sultan who, though entirely independent, relies to no little extent on the advice given him by the Johore Advisory Board in London, and perhaps occasionally accepts a word in season from the Governor of the Straits Settlements, Sir Frank Atheistage Swettenbam (tban whom no one has done more to advance the individual Malay to prosperity), Jobare is to-day on the verge of a new phase of existence, of an awakening from her sleep in the past to a future of promise. The old sultan, Abubakar, father of the present sultan, long had in view the project of a railway which should traverse the entire length of his dominions, and prior to his death a few years back the route was marked off. The reigning sultan is strongly in favour of the line being undertaken, and the people of the country echo his sentiment.

The line will be about 120 miles in length and will run northwards from Johor Bahru to the borders of Negri Sembilan, one of the Fedorated Malay States. To these States, there are now, thanks to British enterprise, over 240 miles of railway in operation, and the results achieved have been so satisfactory as to Justify an extension of fifty-four miles through Negri Sembilan, The line across Jaboro completed and connected with this extension of the Fe derated Malay States system, there will then be a continuous track of railway, beginning at Singapore Docks and terminating at Province Wellesley, the British Settlement on the main..

CONFIDENCE.

said Lord Chatham, "is a plant of slow.

growth." People believe in things that they see, and in a broad sense they are right. What is sometimes called blind faith is not faith at all. There must be reason and fact to form a foundation for trust. In regard to a, medicine or remedy, for example, people ask, "Has it cared others? Have cases like mine | been relieved by it? Is it in harmony, with the truths of modern science, and has it a record above suspicion ? If so, it is worthy of confidence; and if ́1 ám ever attacked by any of the maladies for which it is commended I shall resort to it in full belief in its power to held me.". On these lines
