MISS BROOKE HUNT.

A Singapore tribute to Miss Brooke Hunt, the honorary secretary of the Colonial Troops Club during the Coronation, who won the bearts of the Colonials-and a good many others too--by her unwearying kind thought fulness for their comfort, has recently been sent home. It is a beautifully illuminated and bandpainted sheet of satin, the border com- posed of the national emblems, the shamrock naturally predominating, with the following verses prettily printed in the contre:- DEDICATED TO MISS VIOLET BROOKE HUNT. As long as England rears such daughters fair In womanhood's sweet graces, tander, pure, So long their sons are fit to do and dare For Englands honour, so that they insure The Justice, which for nye she's been renowned Ail o'er the world, in every land and cline, Wreathing her name, before the nations all, In honour's gari nds, glorious and sublime. And we her children's sons from o'er the sea Claiming our birthright now, demand to share In all her conflicts to protect the right, Ready for her to fight, to do and dare Aust alia, Canada, New Zealand, ali From Orient isles or India's bills and plains, Will ever rise when England's foes advance, Fighting her cause while yet one foe remains.

THE NEW MINT AT WORK.

A highly successful and interesting ceremony took place to-day (says, a Bangkok journal) when the new Mint, which has been erected at consi. derable expense and fully equipped with the most modern machinery, was opened by the Minister of Finance, H.R., Prince Mahisara, in presence of a large gathering of officials and ethers. A full description of the buildings and plant in the Mint has already been given in these columns. Everything was looking at its best to-day when the opening ceremony took place. Yesterday the religious rites were carried out by ten priests. Prince Mahisara was conducted to the engine room where he started the largest engine, and this set the machinery in motion. Afterwards he was shown around the various buildings and saw the silver ingots rolled into strips. Mc witnessed the operations of cutting out the silver, milling, cleaning, polishing and weighing the metal, and finally he was taken to the coining room where he put in the first blank coin and saw it come forth in the form of the useful tical,

About 200 coins were stamped and most of them were carried away as souvenirs of an exceedingly interesting occasion. The other departments were visited and altogether a very clear idea was given of

Bailey, who explained very lucidly the working of the machinery. It may here be remarked that the machines are, many of them, exceedingly delicate and complex, and Mr. Bailey's statements had to be very copious in order that those not of a mechanical

PLANS OF THE NEW

ORIENTAL LINE.

SINGAPORE.

The Singapore Free Press prints the follow- ing as from "a newcomer."

It looks very nice when the ship enters its harbour from the open sea, its green verdure being restful to the eve after a good spell of sea gazing, but it deteriorates as one travels the 2 to 3 miles in the town, although its appearance improves there surprisingly, by reason of the fine buildings in the centre of it.

But, apart from first impressions, it is a frand. Its silver currency causes one first of all to think that way, and numberless irritating matters assist in backing up the opinion.

Regarding the proposed new Oriental steam ship line to which we have frequently alluded a Washin, ton despatch under date of the zist ult. sys-lin; Hok Fong and Leung Kaming of Hongkong, president of the new China Commercial Steamship Company, are in this city, accompanied by Lyman Mowry t Its gharry drivers are extortionate and Ean Francisco, counsel for the company. They cheeky, ita rikishaa dirty and the pullers ignor. will leave to-morrow for St. Louis and the Cyant and stupid. It is one of the few British of Mexico coast before returning to San possessions that one has to speak the language Francisco. The first steamer of the new line. of the people, instead of their having to learn according to Eng Hok Fong, will leave Heng a "pidgin "or a smattering of ours. kong in March. The stomers will have 5,000 tons capacity. They will be chartered, though three new steamers have been ordered. The parts of call of the new line will be Hongkong, Shanghai, Moji, Kobe, Yokohama, Honolulu, Manzanille, Mazotlan and San Francisco in the order name, the steamers leaving San Francis co direct for Japan. The object of the new line, said President Eng, is to build up commerce be tween Mexico and South America and China Traffic arrangements have been made with the Kosmos line, he says, for the delivery of Chinese and Japanese products to Panama, Callso and other southern posts. Little retuin business for China is expected from Mexico, but from San Francis o full cargoes will be taken.

Was

There is a big demand for Chinese labour in Mexico, which the new steamship line will try to supply. Fifteen thousand labourers are wanted, says Eng, in the rubber plantations of Mexico. Both the Chinese and Mowry en phatically denied that the new line Intended to promote the unlawful entry of Chinese into the United States an a wholesale scale, "We have an appointment with the Treasury office to-morr..w," said Mowry, "and will disabuse their minds of this suspicion. We want to do a legitimate transportation business and bave no intentions of abetting the unlawful entry of Chinese,"

NEW NAMES FOR OLD VICES.

It is badly lighted except in the heart of the Town, (where no one goes at night), has no up to date transport, even Colamba has electric lighting and cars, beside new pneu- matic tyred rikishas), no show place (except the Botanical Gardens), no comfort for visitors, a band, and no bandstand, no café, and in the principal hotel, no sign of a dressing room for ladies.

It allows builders to put up a building in the busiest part of the town, viz, Battery-wl, with hoarding, so that wayfarers must walk into the out making a public thoroughfare through the

road, in rain or shine, in order to reach Raffles Square.

I have heard that about a year ngn the authorities decided to reclaim land in front of the post office, on the sea side, starting from Johnston's Pier. I am quite prepared to believe that the 25 stones placed on top of one another is the result of the labour for that period, as I saw a"man and a boy" on the works yesterday.

The residents do not want newcomers, or attempt to shew any interest in them, and they do not care for the criticisms of others.
