WEEKLY SHARE REPORT.
In their weekly report, dated sath February, Messrs. Benjamin, Kelly aul Potts write as follows :--
completed. Reports from almost all the dis- tricis point to a very short outturn of the Crop. Business has, as usual, been much interfered-1993, with by the intervening Chinese and Native New-Year holidays.
Supplies are only now commencing on a more liberal scale; arrivals of paddy are to the extent of about 47,000 picats daily.
Considerable shipments have gone forward to Hongkong, during the period under review, sending pices up to a point that has precluded operations in other directions.
Leary engagements which have to be filled during the present and the following month sustain prices and no decline can be expected for some time to come. The first cost of piddy is, at present, somewhere near, $3.95 10 $3.10 a picul.
Alers who have to fill pending contracts for tonnage ready in port and for that near at hand, have to buy anyhow. Some of them are
losing heavily, and fea.s are even entertained
as tu one of them not being able to keep to his engagements which are considerable.
Hongkong demand has slackened: there are occasional inquiries for Japan, the Philip pines and Java, but not much business is re- sulting owing to the high prices ruling here. As for Europe there is nothing doing.
ahead as April, and those who dispose yet of a Most of the mills are fully engaged as far
tittle time ask for exorbitant prices.
BAD HEMP.
Hemp dealers at Manila are becoming alarmed at the increasing shipments of inferior fibre to the United States. The Munila Times says that, the other day, Mr. Worcester, the Commissi ner of Agriculture, called together the leading hemp dealers of that port to con sider the maller. The secretary also stated that, if the evil was not remedied at an early date, the market for Philippines hemp in the tates would be closed. The adulterations in the Manila hemp, dur ny the past few months, have been very noticeable and now the only plausible remedy is inpection by the Govern
iment.
Those present indulged in a c iscussion as to the best possible course to pursue in order to remedy the evil. Commissioner Worcester stated that there were two points that would have to be considered, namely, the desirability of the Government for intervention and when where and how interventan coul be e-tab-
lished. The trouble is, the temp shipped bas the appearance of first-grade hemp, when it is really third-grade hemp ; and it is not the faute of the hemp dealers but of the natives who who make the heads of hemp. The dealers desired to consult with themselves before offering any suggestions to the Government, and so another conference will be held with the Commissioner later,
Since our last report, the market has pre- sented an animated appearance, transactions having probably been on a larger scale than for several weeks, with the result that some of the better class of securities show an ap- preciable advance on last quotations.
Banks-Hongkong and Shanghai Banks have been negotiated at $710 cum dividend and close steady at $685 ex the dividend and bonus i of altogether $25.26 (£2 at exchange 1/7) paid in the 16th instant. Nationals are without business, but can still be placed at §22¦.

Fire Insurances--Hongkong Fires have hardened and have been negotiated at 5325, the market closing firm with further buyers at this figure. The Annual Report of the Company shows a proft for 1901 of $199.3 5.46. It is proposed to pay a dividend of $25 per share, and add $19,920.gh to Reserve Fund, thus, raising it to $1,154.89.90. The balance at credit af 150: Account is $299,799.15 China Fires have been disposed of at $86, at which rate there are further buyers.

The Nippon Yusen Kaisha line began its service to Victoria and Seattle a few years ago with the stramers Kinthiu Maru, Idsumi faru and Yom guchi Mfurt, connecting with the Great Northern system.
