Not much satisfaction was evinced when the result became known as the general opinion prevailed that the winner had fouled Commaner. It was stated that Com winner, when in the straight, rushed up to overtake geku, who then led the field, but

was forced out of the middle course.. On the other hand-figoku's mount maintained that Commoner was coming from behind and consequently, having the choice of the course, must have sterred into the run he had selected. However, the Gods have spoken, and their verdict must rule. Never- theless, Mr. Potts has to be congratulated on baving secured such a valuable trophy as that presented by the German Club. This was undoubtedly the best contested race of the day and much interest was centred in it, as if Winter Rose (who started a hot favourite) had won the cup it would have been won outright by Mr. Buxey, whose Yellow Rose secured the first place last year. The field started well together, Muscatel presently assuming a slight lead over Portasia on whose wake was Claim- and a little in advance of Mr. Buxey's Winter Ruse. This was, the order observable, when the competitors raced past the Stand. To a good rattling pace jokes `rushed passed the others and soon led to be as soon overtaken before the climb up the incline to the Rock had been reached. From this point a grand race ensued, Muscatel, answering to` Moler's call, pressed by Winter Rose and Silver Fox¡· the former soon lagging behind when the For made a splendid spurt, and with every slash of whip got one grand stride ahead. Within a hundred yards of the line the race was in Muscatiê's grip, but each successive siride brought Silver Fox closer to the winner until they passed the judge's Bax with not so much as a fraction of an inch ahead of each other.
