The general quticok in the Egyption trade seems more favourable than for some months past, despite the fact that the margin of profit on Go's twist is less than at the beginning of 19oz. This, in fact, would appear somewhat serious if it were not that a firmer feeling exists among spinners owing to a strong demand for yarns during the closing weeks of the year. "As in the American trade, however, there is a urgent necessity for increasing the production of Egyptian collon. Reports to hand show that the current crop is rot likely to be more than 5,750,000 cantars, instead of the usual 6,500,000, and this predicted shortage cannot be ignored in considering the general situation

The fact must be borne in mind that the con-whole area is obvious, sumption of this class of cotton is increasing in different parts of the work, and whereas four million cantars were formerly sufficient to mec requirements, it now takes over six million Catars to supply the whole trade. Should the prediction prove correct it means that the price of cotton will remain at a high figure, and this may have a serious effect on the margin.

A PROMISING MARKET.

In the American section of the trade the year closed with a greater margin of profit than in January last, and one encouraging feature is that the business in cloth is very steady. Prices rule in favour of sellers, who have been able to

WHERE FRICTION EXISTS.

In the card and blowing-room departments a considerable amount of friction exists at the present time with regard to the remuneration to which the operatives are entitled, and numerous conferences have takes place in the closing months of the past year with the object of arriving at an amicable retilement. The most serious conflict between employers and employed occurred in connection with the dispute at the Duchess Mill, Shaw, and this is unfortunately still in progress. The introduc tion of new machinery has brought about the necessity for a revision of the wages list, and

A steady position is current throughout the market and a feeling of confidence is growing as the result of the present healthy condition of trade in textile products. It is expected tha with a steadier silver market more business will be done with China, and taken altogether the state of the market promises well for the New Year.

being placed on the market. Compared with the mills which have been closed the new projects will far more than counterbalance the falling off in the number of spindles. At Bolton last year three spinning mills went out of existence, viz., Messrs. Crosses and Dewsbury's, the Longworth Mill Co.'s, and the Dacca Twist Co.'s. All told, however, they do not represent a loss of co,oco spindles. Against these have to be placed the new mills which are in course of erection for the Swan-lane, Beehive, and North End Spinning Companies, which in the aggregate will contain over 300,0:0 spindles. The Fine Spinners' Combine have extended the Asia Mill at Great Lever, and have in- .creased their spindles at other mills, and extensions have also been made by Messrs. Crosses and Winkworth, Messrs. Joshua Crook and Sons, and the Union Spinning Company. As a matter of fact there has been more activity displayed in the increase of spindles in the Bolton district than for some years past, and when completed the addition to the number of spindles will not be less than half a million,

NEW OLDHAM PROJECTS.

In the Oldham district, where the depression has been most severe; the same activity has not been noticeable, but nevertheless some notable additions have been made in 1902 to the producing power of the district, and others are contemplated in 1903. The new mills erected in 1901 were as follows:- Dawn Spinning Cu. (Shaw), 76,000 spindles; Gem Spinning Co. (Builer Green), 70,000 spindles; Delta Spinning Co. (Royton), 80,000 spindles, and Monarch Spinning Co. (Royton)," 85,000 spindles. These are not fully at work,

There are other matters, however, not affecting the masters which may make 1903 memorable from the operatives' point of view.
