DURING the hearing of the arson case-yester day at the Supreme Court, the Chief Justice remarked that he noticed from the depositions taken at the Magistracy thaꞌ, in order to avoid stelaying the case over till the next sessions, evidence had not been taken so fully as it might have been. He saw no reason why the case could fiot have been ta en at the next sessions and expressed the- pe that in futuro more evidence would be taken at the Magistracy. THE CRIMINAL SESSIONS.

TURE

The extreme mildejoss of the weather ju now makes the early morning visits to the face Course at this time of year quite delightful, and I am surprised that a larger turn out of on-lockers is not met with in the gray dawn on the lappy Valley. Sir Paul Chater did not put in an appearance to-day; probably because he had to see the Crown Prince of Siam off, ran it be that the strict dollar-grinding instincts of this busy Commercial cumunity can find no great inter- eat on the if? tardly seems so; for the keen spuitsmanlike spinte of the Anglo-Saxon taco rock with them wherever they go and Hongkong, in the past, can boast of as genuine good "sporis "as can be met with-in any Far Eastern community where Britishers congre-

of the entries one notable feature is the absence

of the long I st of representatives of the " prince ly house" once so prominent amongst the con- lestants on the local turf. Mr. John Peel is but merely represented by the single China kecoke, which is not counted for much. Time was when Ewo top second place to tone in our great annual carnival, and as umter of history we might recall the fainous and popular win by Mr. J. THE WEST RIVER PIRACY.

*FURTHER PARTICULA AS.

In our edition last evening-we printed a special telegram from our correspondent intimating that the torcha On Fat had een pirated, near Canton, and that dur- ing a scuffle which ensued nine cap- tures were effected, one man was killed and a European wounded. As the result of further inquiries we have ascertained that the news of the piracy reached Canton yesterday morning, and learn, that the Firt, trading

on the West River between Canion and

additional subsidy may be necessary, at the cost of the genes. taxpayer, to meet this desiderium: At a rough quess in the case of our own company, I should think this arrange- ment would probably cost the taxpayer about zoscow, a year. But the unenlightened tax- payer might surely demur, or, in some cases, perhaps wonder why this benevolent idea should be arrested at the circle of Government employda, seeing that there are many hundreds of ather people who are by no means too well- to-do, but who are obliged to travel, and who would welcome the advantage of travelling at the cheapest possible cost. The Crimmissee further recommends thai, in future contracts, the Government should exercise some control over freights, quoting the example of foreign Governments, more particularly the Austrian - ever, the Committee were not aware that the Government, in this respect.
