CANADIAN FLOUR IN JAPAN. THE OSAKA INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION,
...
Department of Agriculture, utawa, December 3rd, 1952. No kingdom on the face of the earth, in either ancient ordern umes, has forged ahead more rapidly than Japan, not only in civilization in its commonly accepted sense but industrially in its fullest commercial n caning. A quarter of a century ago lapin was practically known as four large and many "Fall islands off the notth-eastern road of China, where people employed their time in growing tea, inlaying trays, and deftly embroidering silken garments with golden threads. To-day japan is an empire wonby of the name, comprising an area of 167,655 square miles, with a population of 44,000 coo (fonty-four millions) of people. The adoption of Western manrers and customs, "The abolition of the feudal system under which the country was governed by a few lords, the conversión af on absolute inth a limited monarchy as the result of the 1863 revolution, and the introduction in 1890 of a popularly elected Parliament, have raised the empire of Nikon from a pretty sovereignty to be one of the Powers of the world which has tow to be reckoned with in all maiters of difference between the Occident and the Orient Japan has national dubt of $257,000,cco.
While not more than on sixth of its area is culticable, the soil is very productive where it can be utilised at all, andahère it seems with every variety of agricu'tura' preduce.· Tobacco, ten, potatoes, rice, and wheat are all grown; its foral kingdom is richly beautiful, and varied; but its fruits though abundant are for the most part of poor quality, Japan tias 2,652 miles of privately owned railways and 768 miles of Government lines, on which last year a net profit in the aggregate was made of $3,734,885. japan possesses an army of 300,000 men, and he was with China cus1 about $225,000,000, of which $80,000,0.0 was repaid by indemnity. She has a well equipped navy manned by 14,000 men, ad her mercantil: marine is worthy of her progress,
During the last fiscal year, Japan exported to the United Kingdom copper, curios, drugs, Jute, silk traw and manufactured), and straw plaits to the value of $1,494,764, while during the same period her imports from the old country in alkali, arass, carriages, cotton yarn, cotwo goods, machinery, metals, ships, and
plachinery, and woolers reached the value
$8,649,101.
During the same period Canada exported to Japan only $188,683 with of goods, while she imported therefrom materials to the value of $1,620,868. But this is in process of change.
Four years ago the Tun. Mr. Nosse, now Consul General for Japan in British North America, with headquarters at Montreal, was despatched to Canada by his Government for the purpose of advocating the Federal Govem- ment disallowance of certain legislation passed by the I rovines of British Columbia prohibiting the admission of Japanese into Canada. Mr. Nosse's successful intervention was followed by the natural desire on the p it ofhis Govern. ment to cultivate international trading relations between Canada and Japan, andite latest out- come of his diplon atic mission has been the decision of the fen. Sydney Fisher, the Dominion Minister of Agriculture, to co-operate with the Government of Japan in furthering the success of the international Exhibition to be held in 1993 in the kingdom of the Mikado, by the furnishing of a section illustrative of almost everything grown or produced in' Canada. Mr William Hutchison, Exbilution Commissione: of the Canadian Government, will be in charge, and one of the main features of the Canadian exhibits will be the making on the spot of
bread from Canadian fi ur, by Mr. Jameson, an Ottawan expert baker, who is calculated to
prove an expeit demonstrator,
Canadian, four of the sort that will be ex hibited contains by actual analysis about ene tenth more of albumenoids than the best quality of Hungarin flour and the albumenoids or gluten being a more tenacious yield of dough which rises better and holds its position in the bak d loaf. When t' is is seen the demonstra tion in Japan will be followed as is where by a demand for Cai adian flour in that country far in excess of the paltry $8,410 worth export- ed last year,
From Canadian flour bakers can make not
only the best quality of bread but likewise the largest quantity per barrel Three independent tests made by first-class bakers with strong Canadian flour have given the following results. Mach, using too pounds of flour, they obtained respectively 146,"152, and 151 pounds of bread, Adulteration of Canadian floor by Indian corn flour, or any cheaper inferior substances is entirely...unknown, and for sweetness; whiteness, and strength this flour is unsurpas sed,

Owing to the trou ble arising from this action of the Government, thep was that be in Peking have intimated to Sheng Kung-pan their willingness to r store him to the control f the Telegraphs, with the exception that the name of Director-General will not be attached to his many titles. Apropos f the above, we hear from another source that control of the Chinese Telegraphs will be main. tained on the same basis as the régime which now controls th China Merchan's' S.N.Co., namely, that the Imperial High Commissioner of the Peiyang (Viceroy Yuan) will have supreme contr 1, while Sheng Kung-pa is to have a colleague as-Vice-Director.--Universal | Chapman, Mr. & Mrs. Norris, K.Ng Sargeop Gazelle.
It COMING EVENTS CAST, ETC,
As one of the first dep.edatory acts in a small way of the Boxers and their's, mpathisers in Chihli in 1500 was to tamper with the rail way line between Peking and Tientsin, so it would seem attempts of a somewhat similar nature have been once more started by a certain section of the people of that part of Chihli province. In other words, people, who may be of the same sort as those of 190, have recently been discovered by the railway authorities to have begun making depredations on the line, amongst which is the extracting of screws and nuts for fastening rails to sleepers, acis fraught with most serious consequences to unsuspecting patrons travelling on the Peking. Tie tsin Railway. As an instance, on the line between Huengts'un and Feng'tai Stations it. was discovered that no less than six hundred odd screws and a is had been extracted on ne night only-26th December last-by "per sons unknown," though, to put it plainly, those persons are nominally known to the railway people and steps are being taken to arrest the actual culprits.-N.
