ANNUAL MEETING,

The seventeenth annual general, meeting of the Perak Sugar Cultivation Company, Limited, was held on the 17th inst. at Shanghai. Mr. W. V. Drymmand presided, and there were present Messrs. W. D. Little, J, H. McMichael, C. J. Dudgeon (Directors),*J. M. 'Young, F. Anderson, A. E. Jones, A. S. P. White-Cooper, Hi King Hiller (shareholders), and L. Kerr (Secretary),

Mr. J. M. Young thought that $500 was rather meagre for a wedding present for Mr. Boyd.

The following resolutions were then pro GREEN ISLAND CEMENT COMPANY, posed:

That C. J. Dudgeon be re-elected a divictor of the Company. Adopted.

That G. R Wingrove be reappointed auditor for the Company with remuneration at 250 taels per annum. Adopted.

That the next annual general meeting of the shareholders be held in December, 1903. Adopted.

A vole of thanks was then proposed to the Chairman and staff for the good work done in the past year, which was adopted, and to which the Chairman responded, thanking the share- holders for tliçir kind femarks.

The Chairman said-Our annual meeting _was called for the 25th day of last month, but for the reasons there explained we were unable to complete our business, and the meeting was sub equently adjourned until today. Report and Accounts have been in your hands for about two weeks, and therefore you have bad time to consider them, and with your per mission we will consider them as read: The paal season bis, been a moderate one, and there is little that i can add to the information already conveyed to you in the annual report. With regard to the Klompang Estate, 1 may say that the in chinery on that estate has worked satisfactorily throughout the season, though it has not of course been worked on anything like its full power The Estate itself bas pad its way during the year, and that is a satisfactory result for an estate in its first year. Turning to the accounts there is only one item which appears to me to call for any special remark, and that is an item showing an ap- parent loss of about Tis. 10,000 on rum. value to be taken into account. I think I can add that such a fall is one that could not pos sibly have been foreseen. The rum in 'the previous year helped us very largely in the accounts and it must be expected to vary from year to year. With regard to one other item, you may perhaps notice that we have only written off about Tis. 5,000 for depreciation on plant, and that we have placed against new machinery of the Klompang estate. may seem to you that that was rather a small amount to write off, and then fare in connection with the item I would like to mention to you a few facts. During the past eleven years, we have written off no less than Ths. 100,000 for: depreciation on plant, machinery, and loss. During the same period we have spent out of working account Ts30,000 in repairs on machinery, plant, etc. The consequence of this is that we have to-day on the Gula estate.a very first-class plant and machinery, which stands in the books at about Tls. 102,000- equal to about. £11,000. If we had now to replace that plant and machinery, it would cost us fully £10.000 and for that sum the present plant is TOW insured.
