CANTON, 17th December. The Medical College for Women, the first in China, was formally opener to-day by the United : tates Consul in the presence of a large audience numbering upwards of seven hund red. Most of the missionaries in Canton were present, a number of ladies from the Shameen and the Chinese officials from the Viceroy down were present either personally or by deputy.. Among those noticed were the Pre- fect of Kwong Chau, the Provincial Judge Provincial Treasurer, Grain Commissioner, the Nam Hol, and a host of smaller officials. A guard of five hundred soldiers lined the streets in the neighbourhood of the College hundreds inside the Cuyler Memorial Church, to do honour to the occasion. Besides the
four or five hundred others waited outside where the opening exercises were conducted,
in the College grounds. Excellent addresses were delivered by Rev. T. W. Pearce of long. kong, Rev. O. F. Wisner, D. D. President of the of the Lo don Mission and Rev. C. d. Nelson Canton Christian College, Rev. II. J. Stevens
