GENERAL BOOTH MAY VISIT. HONGKONG.
"MANUFACTURED MESSIAHS,"
A great shout of "Amen filled Exeter Hall the other night when General Booth, his fur- rowed face nearly as white with excitement né his snowy hair and beard, appealed to the faith of the thousands gathered to bid him farewell previous to his embarking on a 25,000 miles tour to Canada and the United States.
Flinging his arms aloft, the General said: The "old religion-Hallelujah! We don't make and we don't manufacture Messiahs."' This hit, at the ex-Salvationist Messiah of Clap- ton, was greeted with loud laughter and cheers.
"And we are not equal to the task of growing 'Elijahs,"" shouted the General, and the Salva- tionists laughed again at the thrust at Dr. Dowie, the "Elijah" of America, who is causing some trouble in the Salvationist camp there.
He was going to America to inspect. Some people did not like inspection, and wanted to be a law to themselves. Rumours of wonderful things that were being done in the States reached him.
-Some people threw him up with very little. thought and reason, Some said, "We don't approve the way you manage the army." "I say." cried the Generat, " you all have to prove to me that your alterations are desirable. I am the judge, and by the army I am going to stand."
It was true, he s.id, that one or two of his children had fallen from him, but what were his children more than anybody else's ? "The Salvation Army does not belog to the Booth family," he added ironically, and I am not the General of the family: I ain the General of the ' army.
FromAmerica, he said, he should come back celebrate his birthday; then he would visit Switzerland, Holland, France, Italy, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, with a look in at Finland, after that pay, a promised visit to Ceylon and India, and then go to Australia once more, and back by China and the West Indies,
"Then I cas away to shake hands with Peter at the gates of Paradise, and enter the gates where the wicked cease from troubling, and where my weary soul can find a furlough”

STERLING SALARIES,"
At the recent Legislative Council meeting held in Singapore, the Hon C. Stringer on the question of Government salaries said that His Excellency would find that a protest had been entered against the paying of Govern- ment salaries in sterling.. As he understand: that the action did meet with the view of some hos friends at his end of the table; he thought he would explain the attitude he had taken. up. He considered firstly that the change should have been introduced by a special resolution and so have been adequately, dis- cussed, and secondly that the whole state of the currency of the Colony was in an extremely difficult position. He could not bring himself to regard quietly a scheme by which mambers of
the Government service should be sufficiently- provided for, whilst the other people who lived and worked in Singapore were largely pre- cluded from all chance of acquiring wealth awing to the state of the currency. 10 1897 would have been possible to fix the dollar on a z basis. That opportunity had been lost through the inaction of the Government, and the subject now was of immensely greater difficulty owing to the enormous number of British dollars put in circulation since. If the larger scheme could be settled he believed that His Excellency's scheme was a. very good one and would meet almost all cases, except perhaps that in his view, some of the salaries had bren, somewhat liberally stated.
RUSSIA AND ENGLAND.
THE STRAITS OF GIBRALTAR Some weeks ago the Novo Vrainy publishe1 a long historical article on Anglo-Spanish re lations in respect to Gibraltar, accompanied by a map of the Rock and the positions in Spain whence it might be dominated by modern guns. On the 26th inst, again, it i returned to the subject-with a map, a very unusual thing to appear in the paper quoted- this time giving the question a tripartite aspect (the map-includes Northern Morocco), naming Spain, England and Morocco asthe three Powers holding territory that may control the straits.

The children who starve, and the young men and women who are consumed-why, the very idea of it is frightful. For such as they there is always, what the Bible calls a "mighty famine" in the land. Food, though it may be taken plentifully, does not nourish them. It makes no fat; it gives no strength. To prevent this, to cure this, to save the young ones at the mother's knees, and the bright boys and girls who are just looking at the world with hopeful and ambitious eyes, is the purpose of
