AIXED HERITAGE.
This great litles mán is a Malay of mixed origin. His mother is of Tagal-igarrote extrac tion with a dash of Chircie blood, which is visible in the Oriental slant of her son's intel ligent eyes, the contour of his check-bones, and
the yell wish tinge in his complexion. Aguinaldo himself says he is the son of
Spanish General of aristocratic lineage. In view of his high ambitions and military talent, as well as a certain proud dignity of hearing
rarely acquired except by inheritance, his claim is a reasonable ane, He is also extremely cleanly in his habits, and, while a prisoner, was most particular about having a fresh change of
linen and immaculate duck trousers every
morning. He has. ton, the cast of countenance peculiar to high-class Spaniards born in Cuba or the West Indies with a strain of island blood.
INTERESTING BIOGRAPHY,
Aguinaldo was a precocious boy, and as early as the age of fourteen passed a successful examination and became a student in "the medical department of the Pontifical University at Manila. In 1888 he had some trouble with the Spanish authorities and fled to Hongkong, the political baven and chosen residence of many of his countrymen.. There he continued his studies at the Victoria College, which he left to serve in the Chinese army, with the purpose With of learning something of the art of war.
the same end in view he transferred himself to the Chinese navy, where for several months he was under the command of the brilliant bu unfortunate Ca'tain McGiffin. When he at last returned to his beloved islands it was as a falling firebrand in a heap of snow.
FILIPINO FAMILY LIFE.
Some months before he was captured in his remote retreat at Palanan by General Funston, word was brought to American headquarters that the little brown "Presidente" was hiding at Carbarnan Major Cronin with a picked troop swooped down upon the place one mom- ing, and found nobody but Aguinaldo's wife, bis mother, his little five-year-old son Miguel,- and a retinue of Chinese servants. The two women and the boy were made prisoners, but immediately paroled with characteristic Ameri- can courtesy. His mother chews betel-nut and smokes cigarettes incessantly. Sales in new grain (speculative naturally) for February, March, April, to Europe and Japan are said to amount to about 15,000 tons and 800 tons respective- ly.
