H.M.S" TERRIBLE."
THE ARRIVAL AT PORTSMOUTH,
WARM WELCOME HOME TO CAFT, SCOTT AND THE HANDYMEN⠀⠀ H.M.S. Terrible arrived at Portsmouth, on the 19th ult, after lying at Spithead during the night. Soon after eight o'clock she was seen to be gett ng under weigh, and in charge of the pilot, and accompanied by dockyard tups, she proceeded slowly to the harbour,
It was a lovely morning, the fullest ex- perienced on t'e South Coast for weeks, and the big ship made a splendid picture as she moved slowly alon in the brilliant sunlight... As she approached that narrow entrance to the port she was boisterously cheered by the assembled crowds who lined that, beach, a greeting that was taken up by, the boys of the training ship, St. Vincenf, and the crews of the ships in harbour. As the giant cruiser moved to her berth alongside the South Railway jetty the ship's band broke into the strains of Houts, Sweet Home, which was taken up with the greatest goodwill by the spectators.
On the jetty many touching reunion scenes were witnessed after a parting of three years.
Capt. Percy Scott, on stepping ashore, was the recipient of a hearty greeting from the jetty," which he acknowledged by touching his cap. The ship herself was spick and span as paint and polish could make her, and looked smart, keeping up the reputation-sho-has-carned.for.. herself.
Major Dupree, Mayor of Portsmouth, accom- panied by Mr. Stevenson, secretary to the En- tertainment Committee, visited the Terrible, and saw Capt. Percy Scott, when it was arranged that the crew should leave the ship at six o'clock next Tuesday evening to attend a public ban" quet. Capt. Scott thanked them in the name of the officers and crew for their generous invita- tion and the bearly welcome home,
As with all home-coming warships, the Terri- ble's crew took home many pets, chiefly song-birds and monkeys. Some of the latter, put on board at Colombo, died at sea. ·· “A good job, joo,” remarked the petty officer "for they were-an-awful nuisance to all hands, except, of course, their owners." Parts of the mess-deck bad an appearance of a small aviary, but preity "Nelly," the spotted deer, was the favorite pet. Two deaths occurred on board during the passage. The names of the men are Petty Officer Martin, fate of the Sandpiper, and Seaman Babb, Zamar. The former was buried at sea, the Int'er at Singapore.
The Terrible consumed 70,000 tons of coal during ber commission.
THE "OTELIA PEDERSEN."
In a recent issue, we gave in nccount of the abandonment of the American' schooner Qulia Pedersen with a cargo of lumber con-> signed to Messrs. Butterfield and Swite at Hongkong. We now hear that a telegram į received at Manila by Rear-Admiral Wildes, fram Commander James R. Selfridge, U.S.N., states that the U.S S. Princeton, which left Cavite the morning of the 1st instant for. Yokohama, whither she was conveying a mum. ber of short-time blue-jackets and marines for transportation to the States, had been forced to put into Nagasaki in a badly leaking condition, brought about by the stormy weather "en- countered on her trip up north.
The cablegram further stated that when some. 150 miles out from Manila, the Princeton ran across the wreck of the Oleita? Pedersen, an American schooner loaded with lamber and floating about in a helpless condition. Ten seamen were rescued and taken to Nagasaki.

press that several of these appointments create precedents, ad beloken an appreciation of the position in China that it is gratifying to observe. Thus we have the post created of Consul-General for Szechuan and the excellent appointment made of Mr. A. Hosie to be the first eccupant, a man who has already done good work in the province; also we have a Consul General for Yunnan and Kweichow, and the likewise well-merited promotion of Mr. W. H. Wilkinson, who has recently'd 'ne good work at Ningpa and Werchow, to fill the past. It is perhaps worth calling attention to the fact that Great Britain has now five posts in China, to which Consuls General are nominated: Canton, Shanghai Tientsin, and the two new positions we have noted above..
THE DEATH OF ZOLA.
FURTHIN PARTICULARS. The Echo de Chine translates the following telegram, with reference to the death of Zola from Russian papers-
Zela, returning from the country, had given orders to put a fire in the bedroom. Put the servant did not succeed in getting the fire to bum, probably through the chimney not drawing well. M. and Mme. Zola retired about to p.m. The next morning at 9.30, the valet knocked at the door but got no answer. It was determined to break in the door. A suffocating smell of carbonic acid gas. escaped from the room. Zola was found with his head and shoulders on the carpet and his feet on 'the edge of the bed; he had evidently tried to get up to open the window. Mme. Zola was in bed, unconscious. About noon Mme. Zola was successfully restored to consciousness, but The attention of the police commissary was she was not in a state to give any explanation,
excited by the fact that the dogs which slept on the floor do not seem to have suffered. The valeet on being questioned declared that M.and Mme. Zola appeared to be in excellent spirits the previous evening. M. Zola complained of the bad state of the chimney and ordered that it should be seen to the next day. The doctors explain the death of M. Zola by his falling on the floor, where the carbonic acid gas was denser than at a certain height.

Senator Stewart of Nevada then resumed his presentation of the case of the United States and introduced documents from the archives of the bishopric of San Francisco in support of his contention that the law of 1835 founding the Pious Fund gave the proceeds in perpetuity for the civilization of the natives of California and the propagation of the Catholic religion in those regions, and that the expulsion of the Jesuits by the King of Spain only changed the trustees of the fund, as the Jesuits were not its owners, but merely trustées for the church.
Senator Stewart dealt lengthily with

Mr. McEnerney contended that the funds were administered in turn by Jesuits of Spain and Mexico, and that the funds were never the property of the administrator and always retained their original charter as trust funds, Mexico's contention that the funds were intended solely for the civilization of Spanish or Mexican subjects was untenable. PROJECTED SAILINGS FROM HONGKONG, -SUBJECT TO ALTERATION,
Prior to the invention of the new propeller which has given such extraordinary results the swillest cruiser in the world was H.M.S.; King Alfred. She emerged from her eight hours' full power trial, recently, with triumph... ant success. The mean speed of the eight hours' run was 23463 knots. Her three sisters could not come up to this. The Leviathan made 23.23 knots, the Good Hope 23.05 knots, and the Drake 23.05 knots. It will be seen that the Drake, which, presumably, was not fitted with the new propeller at the time of the above trial, has increased her speed by over a knot, or it may be that the improved speedINABA has been obtained on a second trial of the above vessel. All are now cruisers.
