Of these Inst-named one (No. 1) was launched on a Oct. of last year, and another (No, z) on 21 Feb. of this year. Along with Nos. 3,4 and <, not yet launched, they each displace 117 tons, and have as armament a single torpedo tube, No. At will displace 180 tons and have one torpedo tube; and of the other three, A2, A3, A4, no particulars are giveny as the craft are not yet laid down,

cleared for the occasion and the neigh-, | báurhood revolved slowly round her and "look in" her toilette from every point of the com- pass. The financial return for what one would imagine must have been a most unpleasant tx- perience, seems hardly commensurate with the embarrassment thereof. On the first day the total reached £7 odd.

THE NAVAL DISPLAY. With the week that ends to-morrow, we arrive at the very end of Coronation hems, and If it may be said without laying oneself open to the charge of want of loyalty, there can be no question that the public at large, and newswards provided in the dining-room at 3d. paper writers and readers in particular, ure by per head the first day and 6d the second. no means sorry therefor.

Lady Raglan stood most of the time in Real affection for the person of the King, the centre of her handsome apartment, and sympathy for the disappointment which bis illness occasioned him no less than his subjects, alone prevented the celebration from passing off in half-hearted, way. Even as it was, London was far from full on the pth, the decorations were second-rate, and the illuminations, taken as a whole, compam- tively poor. The moment the actual cere- mony was over people streamed away into the country in their thousands, some it is true to Portsmouth for the Review, but the bulk to have a quiet rest. The naval display" wa-ot a very brilliant affair from the expert's point of view, too many crocks appeared in the lines figuring as effective war-ships, which, if the great struggle burst upon us now-could neither fight or run away-but would merely serve to carry to the bottom many hundreds of gallani men. Seeing that naval progress gives to the most magnificent vessels a life of not more than 20-25 years, after which they rank as old-fashioned, it is manifestly impossible inva fleet like our own to keep every unit absolutely up to date. There must always be a proportion of ships which fall short of the highest modern- ity, and which yet are capable of doing" good service in the defence of the country but that is an entirely different matter to parading before the country as effective a long list of useless ships armed (1) with prehistoric weapons. This, however, by the way. The Fleet assembled off Spithead made a brave show when the weather permitted it to be visible, and at night when illuminated gave the landsmen a rare treat; in that connec- tion it mattered little what calibre the vessels

the sight was equally beautiful in any case. The final maneuvres were greatly marred by the weather, and

THE "GRIDIRON MOVEMENT had to be altogether abandoned, a disappoint- ment to the Fleet which had been practising it most patiently, and was not altogether unwill- ing to show off the result to the japanese on- lookers. Our ally's two war-vessels and a Portuguese cruiser were the only foreign ships in the roads.

Now the King is enjoying a quiet cruise with his family, after which, visits to Denmark and Sandringham will precede the "progress" through South London which will serve to open the autumn season.

The exhibition of the Abbey to the public at rates which varied on different, days between 5/- and sixpence, has been pecuniarily a great success ; the stream of visitors being frequently a mile in length for the greater part of the day, A good deal of feeling has been raised over the proceedings howeves many persons argu ing that the National Church, should be open to all people without payment; while still larger numbers insist that the demand of an entrance fee reduced the consecrated building to the level of a theatre, or other show place Соттам

has been responsible, not only for the abandon- ment of many outdoor functions this month, the failure of two race meetings, and several cricket matches, but also from the destruction of the fruit crops: Common garden fruits have been at a preposterous price all the summer, and it is now stated that plums and apples, will be extremely scarce this season. Speak ing on this subject recalls a new War Office scandal. It appears that the fruit used for the jam provided for the troops during the war was all imported from abroad, and being of the cheapest quality frequently arrived at the English factories in a semi-fermented or rotten condition, but was nevertheless made into jam and forwarded to patieni Tommy who frequently had to throw away his ration. And this "economy" was practised during the phenomenal fruit season of last year, when it was calculated that thousands of pounds rotted on the trees owing to the over-stocked condition of the market!

The Shah arrived in London last Monday and has been duly fêted ever since. Crowds assemble to greet him whenever and wherever he may be expected to make his appearance, and His Imperial Majesty seems much gratified at the enthusiasm evinced, and which is really rather surprising-iflemperately considered. To-day the

for the Review, returning to town this evening, when, as he will be decked in all his most gor-built, 14 to pedo-boat destroyers built and 5 genus jewellery, together with the whole of his suite, which in full-dress presents a perfect blaze of gems, large crowds may be expected at Waterloo.

The Baer Generals were literally mobbed throughout their brief stay at Horrock's Hotel, whither they return next week on the comple- tion of their visit to Holland. They did not attend the Naval Review, because--the state- ment is that of Botha's Secretary-they were unprovided with suitable clothes.

In respect

of their visit to the King, the sartorial question was settled by a rush to town on Saturday evering, whence they returned to Cowes on Sunday arrayed in all the splendour of frock coats, silk hats, and immaculate shirts. All three expressed themselves delighted with their reception by His Majesty and the Queen, and both surprised and gratified at the friend- liness of the crowd.

PHILIPPINE VOLCANO.

STILL ACTIVE.

Mount Taal, on Vulcan Island in Bombon Lake, Batangas Province, is again giving evidence of activity. From the information received by Quartermaster Agent T. H. Robin- son, of the chartered transport Lal-Log the natives in the vicinity of the volcano fear ampetition of the disastrous results fol- lowing the previous eruptions of this celebrated menace to life and property. Mr. Robinson reports that the mountain is smoking to a greater extent than heretofore, and that the old residents" are considerably worried as to the outcome. Mount Taal is situated in the centre of the laguna, known as Lake Taal, about sixty miles from Manila, and has been a threatening feature for hundreds of years to the people not only residing in the immediate neighborhood, but to the entire population of northern Luzon.
