E Major-General Gascoigne, who was received with applause, upon rising to address the meeting, said Mr. Chief Justice. beg to thank you most heartily for the very kind words you have addressed to me, and, gentlemen, 1 beg to thank you with my whole heart for the kindness with which you have received those words, Gentlemen, I cannot sufficiently express myself in gratitude for the princely, the very handsome and beautiful bowel, which you have presented to myself and to my wife. Believe me when I say that we shall.qyer regard it not only as a souvenir of the Coronmion, but still more precious to us will be as a souvenir of the universal kiad ness, the universal friendship, and the un- versal good feeling that she and I both have experienced during the four happy years that we have spent in Hongkong. Gentlemen, when I look back to the Coronation I confess that I am very proud indeed to have been associated with yn at that period. It was a very anxious time. First of all, we had the deep anxiety-the deep national anxiety- which we shared with the rest of the Emplic. That happily passed away, but then we hac oui own minor anxieties occasioned, as the Chief Justice has said, by the unustal in clemency of the worse season that I certainly ever remember, and, "1 believe I am right in saying, the worst season that is within the re- collection of many of you who date back lar long than I do myself. Still it is a pleasant! thought for me to know Dia: under the utmost difficulties (because we had great difficulties to encounter) we successfully carried Out every item of our original programme. It is true that two items were somewhat marred by the heavy rain it came on, especially at the children's tea at which a very large number were present, although had it not been- for the rain awe. should have had many more, Nevertheless, it was a great succese. The other occasion, which I regret still more, because it was the people's night-the night of the illu winations--was marred undoubtedly towards the end of it by the feart rain that came down, but I am glad to say there was a couple of hours during which thepen, le could see-for themselves what bad be done for them by the Committee. Everything that is possible for the energy and brain of man to do, backed up by the money subscribed, had been done, and people were able to see for themselves that such was the case. With those two exceptions, with many postponements to hinder ys, as the Chief Justice pointed out, the Com mittee still stuck manfully to the pro gramme and I am proud and glad to think that we carried through every item of it. It will be ever a recollection of pride to me, and my wife and I will cherish this very handservatory- "some souvenir long after our names are forgol. ten in Hongkong (No, no). it will be -a souvenir not only of the Coronation
of King Edward VII, but a recollection of the great kindness and friendship that we have received here in Hongkong. I wish to say one thing more before concluding, and (bat is that I was immensely impressed by the liberality with which the appeal for subscrip- tions by the Committee was met both by Europeans and by Chinase. It was no matter of surprise to me that this should be so because

barrow. Now a spade is not a thing one would specially select for presentation. The proverb, "call a spade a spade" rather suggests that there's no romance about it, and, indeed, at first-sight, it might seem that a barrow is not an object easily lending itself to artistic treatment by a silversmith. But we consulted Mr. Turner, and, in the event, Mr. Bird was kind enough to prepare a charming sketch of an ornamental barrow, which we put into the hands of a local British firm to reproduce as a silver table orna- ment. Unfortunately, that firm was dependent on Chinese workmen, and although the Chinese are most ingenious and clever in the production are familiar, on this occasion the result was most unsatisfactory.
