GOVERNMENT CLERKS' QUARTERS: The Government of India, at the instance of the Local Government, sanctioned the con- struction of quarters for poor clerks on small pay some 6 or 7 years back. The idea at the time, says the Rangoon Times, was to assess rent at the rate of to per cent, on each man's salary, and thereby assist the clerks, but this idea has apparently been abandoned, not, we trust, with knowledge of the Government of India. Certain rules have been famed by the P. W.D., which has charge of the buildings, to the effect that none but clerks drawing salaries varying from Rs. 200 to Rs. 300 per mensam are eligible for occupation, and that whilst such tenants are available, men (drawing smaller salaries are ineligible.
