·GIRDLING THE WORLD. §

The Times of Ceylon gives an interesting account of a visit to the big cable ship Cotonta which passed through Singapore on the 14th of the cable. This Company it was that made inst, and has the unique duty of laying down

the longest span of cable and splicing the last strand of the greatest cable service in the world. We quote from our contemporary

The Colonia is the largest cable steamer afloat; being over 8,000 tons gross and over 5,000 tons net register. She is too ft long, 36 ft wide, and 39 ft deep; able to carry 10,000 tons dead weight and yet steam at a speed of [1] 'knots an hour. She has four huge tanks which can hold 3,000 aaurical miles of cable, and on her present trip she is taking out the full complemcat of cable, as the section she is to complete is the longest on the system. The vessel was quite recently completed by Messra Wigham, Richardson & Co, Ltd, of Newcastle, and this is her first commission. She is in com. mand of Captain Harold Woodcock, formerly of the Company's Sroféu, which laid a section of the cable last year.

EARLY DECISIONS ABOUT THE ROUTE, **At one time the route across the South Paci- fic Ocean was thought impracticable and it was no; and may experts had been consulted that it was decided to carry on the work along the present route. The original plan, when it was believed that the South Pacific route was 181- posible, was to lay the cable across the North Pacific from Canada un to the Aleutain Islands and the Kuriles, which lic.between Alaska, Kamschatka and Japan, and carry it to ja- pan where it was to connect the cables to Australia on one side and to China and

REASON FOR BIG SHIPS,

A correspondent to the Marine Journal writes as follows:-"A ship, say, of 8,000 tons displacement and another. of 26,000 tons displacement are both designed for the same speed; the smaller ship will absorb anywhere from 7 to 8 pounds of coal per too-ton mila whereas the later or larger ship will require something less than 5 pounds of coal per 100- on mile, assuming, of course, that the efficiency of the engines in each ship is equal. It is therefore readily understood how ce momical ships of these increased dimensions are, when we remember that the opemting expenses for the personnel of the larger ship will be very little more than that of the smaller."
