It is with regret we announce the death of Mr D. MacArthur, late second engineer of the C.N.S. Prkin. While the Pekin was at Ningpo on Tuesday 12th inst, Mr. MacArthur reported sick and was attended to by Dr. Hickin. The illness was not considered serious and he proceeded in the vessel on lier voyage to Shanghai but became syorse and though every attention and care were afforded him by the Captain and officers he died at about 5 o'clock on the 13th inst.
THe canton-HaNKOW RAILWAY it is reported from Fèking that an Imperial Rescript has been issued consenting to an agreement made between an American Syndi cale, of the one part, and Sheng Kung-pao, Viceroys Chang Chih-tung, of the Hukuang provinces, and 'ao Mu, formerly of the Two Kuang provinces, of the other part, by which the American Syndicate engages to construct a grand trunk railway line between Canton and Hankow, the name of the new line to be called the Yuch-Han Railway.
CLEVER TRICK-On Sunday last three Chinamen entered a money changer's shop at No. 135 Queen's Road Central with the pre tence of buying some subsidiary.coins. IN THE NEW TERRITORY,
The body of a Chinese married woman, 37 years old, was found by her husband hanging to a beam, at No. to Shing Ling Pi village in Tung Chong district. It appears. that she had been sick for sometime, and was last seen alive, by the husband on the 16th inst before he went to work in the fields. Dr. Fan Chong, Hin, of the New Territory, had attended her, and stated that she was suffer: ing from severe pain in the stomach and head and prescribed for her. When the body was taken to the Tung Chong Police Station there was a broad mark on the neck, and the skin was torn in several places.
