FIRES AT CHEONG CHOW ISLAND.
MANY HUTS RAZED TO THE GROUND.
Last night at about nine o'clock the Police authorities received information to the effect
that huts on Cheng Chow Island were ablaze. The Brigade, under Mr. D. MacDonald, went away in the Police launch, and landed on the Island to find a hard task before them. Indeed, 180 many hats were on fire that they scarcely knew at which end to commence operations. The dry matting burned so quickly that the idea of saving the huts bad to be, abandoned and the Brigade confined their energies to pre. venting a spread of fire. The estimated dam- age was $400, and it was not covered by insurance.

and the side-lights thrown thereon reports of the inquest proceedings come to hand stili form as absorbing topic of conversa tion. The enquiry held in the first instance at. the school on July 8th-two days after the first fatality was only of a cursory nature. The Court consisted of the British Consul (Mr. H. F. Brady) and three jurors (Messrs. "Greaves, of Butterfield and Swire, Derrick, director of the Cable Company, and Russell of Cornabé Eckford & Co.). After an examination of the FOUNDED in 1891, by DR. CANTLIE body of the elder Gray-Owen, the inquest was adjourned to the 19th. The results of the post-mortem on the portions of the viscera sent to Shanghai in the meanwhite came to hand. The cause of death, as ascertained by the bacteriological scrutiny there, was declared to be cholera, and the jury returned a verdict ac- cordingly. Dr. King, the medical man attached to the C. I. M. compound at Chefoo, has written to the N. C. D. News, adhering to his opinion that ptomaine poisoning was the cause of the calamity, and asserting that the comma bacillus found in the laboratory at Shanghai to be present in the viscem of the deceased is not always and necessarily an accompani ment of cholem That there is, however, an intimate connection between the chicken pies and the thirteen deaths that ensued is fairly clearly established, in the opinion of the jury. At the two tables from which the contaminated pies were served there were 23 boys and one
in the course of the three days, and only six master. Eighteen of these boys were taken ill,
recovered. Five, moreover, to all appearances, partook of the same pies without any ill effects. The remaining case was that of the boy Mom- sen (not Molloy) who was sitting at another table, but who is said to have a second helping from one of the fatal, pies.
This brings us to the headmaster's evidence. in which there are one or two strange admis- sions. When serving from his own table (at which there were no cases) he says that he noticed at the time that
THE PIE" WAS "TAINTED." That being so, it seems strange that the serving went on. Opa would have thought that was an obvious opportunity for the cessation of the meal and an examination of the pies. Perhaps the pious Crates down to $86, but have since become firmer theory of "no Sunday cooking" to which, Cand shares are now enquired for at $87, after directly or indirectly, these thirteen young sales at this figure. Kowloon Wharfs have been fixed at $883 and $89, and ingre shares can be placed at the higher figure Shanghai and Rongkew Wharfs are in demand Test Tis, 292).att
Another admission that strikes the casual reader as open to criticism might be touched upon in passing. The principal said in the course of his evidence that at about four in the afternoon of Sunday, ie, within three hours of the fatal tiffin, the boy Broomball came and told him he had vomited. In spite of the fact that the questionable condition of the pies had already suggested itself to the headmaster's observation, he did no more than tell the boy to lie down while the rest went to church.
