The Kaiser and Kitchener SOUTH AFRICAN COMMANDER INVITED TO

VISIT GERMANY.

LONDON, August 4th.. To-day's mast striking news is that the

German Emperor has sent a pressing invita tion to Lord Kitchener to visit Germany The invitation appears to have been ten dered on behalf of the German anny, which, the Emperor promises, will be proud to welcome so distinguished a soldier. Loodan seems in doubt whether to cheer or sneer over this news, for the authenticity of which the Standard vouches. Coming on the eve of Coronation, however, it is regarded as an expression of good will, whereby the Kaiser intends to clean the slate of pro-Boer memories, and signalize the advent of the new reign with sympathetic German sentiment. There is little prospect that the invitation will be accepted.

Making Ready for Coronation. Preparations for Saturday's great event have been taken up in carnost, and the city is as suming much the holiday' appearance which it

had before news of the King's illness; throw oif its balance. Accommodation and supplies for visiting multitudes will be as abundant as in June, decorations have began to appear, and visitors are fincking to the city. Ocean lines from America deliver so many passengers that it will be a serious problem to get them home again, and Americans when carlier and remained on this side of tie are hastering back from the Continent in large numbers daily. Every word concerning the King is of course eagerly read; and although his condition, as reported, certainly gives no occasion for uneasiness, the current of solicitude for him will hardly be checked until he shall be safely back here on Friday. BERLIN, July 9th

The report that Germany is negotiating. for the purchase of the Portuguese Island of. Macao is discredited in political circles here.

The present would certainly be the most inopportune moment for announcing even the contemplation of such a transaction. Germans

'Moreover, within the last few days two poli ticians of standing have mooted the question whether it is not advisable to sell the German African colonies to England, to which Die Post

replies: "It would be a sad pity if Germany cropt back within her, European frontiers like a snail in its shell, while the Union Jack is being raised in one country after another, and the dream of Anglo-Saxon dominion over the world is surely nearing realisation,"

All things considered, Berlin finds consola- tion in the fact that the Lisbon correspondent of the journal has the best authority for stating that the rumor is unfounded.

BERLIN, July 10th, It is semi-officially announced that the statement-circulated in London to the effect that Germany was desirous of acquiring the Portuguese island of Macao is pure invention:
