CHOLERA AT PORT ARTHUR,
GREAT MORTALITY AMONG THE PEOPLE.
SEAN
"The increase of cholera in "Port Aftbar is causing the authorities much alarm, the special correspondent of the Shanghai Times reports, Twenty cases have been recorded among the European population, thirteen of which have ended fatally. Among the Chinese the morality is excessive. No sccurate figures are obtainable. concerning the Chinese death rate. Up to the present date Dalay has escaped the infection Stringent precautions are being taken to check the spread of the disease. The C. E. Railway's Co.'s steamer North arrived in Chefoo from Port Arthur with a case of cholera aboard. The afflicted person succumbed before reaching port. The sleamer is now in quarantine
CHOLERA AND THE EXPORT OF TEA.
Tientsin has suffered more than any other place in the Far East from cholera during the past two months, and one of the results of this state of affairs has been a marked decrease in the amount of export business from Nagasaki to North China, says the local newspaper. During June this was particularly noticeable in the shipments of tea. In that month, only 112,4fo catties of common grade tea-about half the quantity shipped in previous years-left Naga saki. Some improvement has come about now, however. The N. V. K. 5, Genkai-maru, which left Nagasaki for North China, carried no less than 100,000 cattles of common grade ten, the largest single shipment during the season.

MANY TWINKLING POINTS.
Arrangements had been made for lighting between so and 60 bonfires in Surrey on Coro. nation night, says the L. & C. Express, and these embraced nearly all the highest bills in the country, including. Leith Hill, Box Hill, Holmbury Hill, Ewhurst Hill, Chinthurst Hill, Hindhead, St. Martha's, Hill, Pewicy Hill, the Hog's Back, Marrow Downs, Chobham, Bag shot, Combe Warren, Wimbledon, &c.. Some of these bonfires were lighted surreptitiously on Thursday or Friday, but on Monday even- ing, the 30th June, the great majority were lit, and, the night being dark, those occupying a good position on some of the higher hills could count a great many fires. At Guildford there was some disturbance in consequence of the decision of the local committee not to light the bonfire till a later date. A very urge crowd assembled ou Pewley Hill, and despite the efforts of the local police the huge pile was ignited amid cheers. A little Hefore to o'clock a signal rocket was fired, as had been arranged, from the Big Wheel at Earl's Court, and it was not long before it became evident that the ins tructions conveyed thereby were being carried out. In a short time the heights of the Kent, and also the Surrey bills, were outlined, with "twinkling points of fire," and in every direct- ion a dull glow, almost immediately increasing to a bright glare, do noted the kindling of answering beacons. In fact the South and South-Eastern suburbs appeared to be lying in a basin half encircled by a line of miniature volcanoes furiously spouting smoke and flame.

Fifty-three prisoners, says the Times of Geylon, escaped after assaulting and overpowering the jail guards and the police, and in the males which ensued twelve prisoners were wounded and two killed by the fire-arms of the guards, and officers. Five hundred prisgnem were employed on a quarry and on the completion of work for the day they were conducted back to the fail at about 3.30 o'clock, which is the hour at which work is stopped on Saturdays.
