In the bye-election at Leeds the Liberal party have gained a decisive success. The seat has hitherto been regarded as a Conserva- tive stronghold. Owing, however, to the marked feeling, excited by Sir John Gorst's Education Lill and Sir Michael Hicks Beach's proposed Cora Tax, the Government have lost popularity. In a manufacturing centre such as Leeds the sentiment is emphasised with the result that a Liberal member has been returned with a handsome majority.

The return of the number of bu- bonic plague cases which have been notified as occurring in Hongkong since the beginning of the year shows 518 cases and joy deaths.

The style of the Corbett-Fitz simmons fight at Carson City was reversed, Fitzsimmons on this occasion giving all the punishment, but at the last succumbing to an unexpected blow. Up till the eighth round he had it all his own way, making a punching bag of his younger but less agile and skilful anta gonist, but he failed to administer a knock-out blow. LIQUORS AFTER PROHIBITED HOURS. The master of shamshu shop, No. 536, Queen's Road West, was charged with "selling spiritous liquors on the 1st inst. after 10 p.m. Insp. Dymond said on the day in question at 10.30 p.m. he sent a man with a marked 10 cent piece to the defendant's shop to buy shamshu, the man came out with it. He went in and found the marked coin in the till. Defendant was fined $50, or one month, $5 of the fiue, if paid, to go to the informer,

Two Chinese watermen were accused of steal- ing eleven tons of coal from a sunken junk at Yau-ma-ti. It appears that the alleged robbery was effected by a basket being continually. lowered beneath the water and filled by one of the three accomplices who dived in. The owner of the junk happened to pass by and quickly collared two of the men. But for the coin cidence this daring robbery might have been successful. They were remanded for inquiries. A Chinese traveller from Singapore, charged with carrying a revolver and ammunition with puts pennit pleaded ignorance, but had the arm and ammunition confiscated and was fined $5.
