A MARTYR'S LETTER-Another letter, written by Mr. Wondroffe shortly before his martyrdom, white in hiding from the losers during the memorable summer of 1900, has only just come to band. The letter was sent to Mr. Marcus Wood by Mr. C. H. Judd, who, writing from Ping-yao on Feb. 19, and enclos ing it, says that he received it from Mr. Ernest Taylor, who had it from a Christian native. EXECUTIONS IN SOOCHOW:-On the 2181 inst. five rebels were captured and executed. On the 22nd inst a despatch was received from the Board of Punishments for

the execution of twelve more who are confined. One of the guilty parties has proved to be an ex-army office: who was becoming a most daring robber. The others were only part of the band which assisted him in his zefarious vocation.

SIR, Referring to your editorial in your issue of yesterday's, I beg to cove your indulgence

for the following few remarks.

While, in substance, I am entirely at one with the views expressed in your paper in connection with our focal concern, allow me to point out that, barring the identity of the

existence, there is hardly another point of work that both companies depend on for their

similarity between the two. Our directorate is composed of the leading business men here while that of the Shanghai Docks, according to Mr. Holliday's remarks at the annual general meeting, if I remember rightly, is formed of dock people only. Besides, while

The net profits for that period, including $1,438,248.07, balance brought forward from last account, after paying all charges, deducthing. interest paid and due, and making provision for bad and doubtful Accousis amount to $3.557,618.92.

The directors recommend the transfer of $500,000 frdin the Profit and Loss Accoyat to credit of the Silver Reserve Fund, which food will then stand at $1,750,000.

They also recommend writing of Dank Pre- mises Account the sum $23,000,

After making these transfars and deducting. remuneration to Directors there remains for appropriation £2,842,618.97, out of which the Directors recommend the payment of a dividend of one pound and ten shillings sterling per share, which at 4/6 will 'absorb $533-333-33.

The difference in exchange between 4/0, the rate at which the dividend is declared and 178, the rate of the day, amounts to $871,544,71.

The balance. $1,437.74088 to be carried to new profit and loss account.
