Seldom, if ever, has a more popular appointment been made to the Hongkong Legislative Council than that, which we have the pleasure of recording in this issue. TO AVOID DOCKING:-The newest idea for cleaning the bottoms of ships at sea, so, as to avoid the expense of decking, is to make long, tube of waterproof canvas, with a sort of bag at the end of it. The tube is lowered by ropes over the side of the vessel, and the operator slides down inside it until be reaches the bag. This is weighted at the bottom to upper end of it is a glass plate, through hold it down and keep it steady, and near the which the diver can look and see what he is doing. His hands are passed through sleeves provided with glove-like ends, by which means he is able to remove the barnacles and weeds which have collected on the bull of the ship.

WRECKS AND CASUALTIES:- The Bureau Veritas Monthly List, published on corded in April last, announces that 53 sailing the 1st of June, of wrecks and casualties re-
