THE BOXER TROUBLES IN
SZECHUEN.
THE FIRST NEWS.
CHENTU, Juno zoth, A telegram just received from Kien Cheo, states that the Boxers have at last commence
operations, on June 17th at Tien Chu Chao in Yang Hsien district, and the American Metho dist Chapel was destroyed, the preacher Mr.. Chu was beheaded and nine of the members also killed. Kien Chea, which is on the direct route between here and Chong King, is infested with there bands, and daily they are gaining ground. Mr. Lewis who is on his way There wires from Kien Cheo: "Boxers strongly fortified here. Official Na helpless wired for
oops." Whether Mr. Lewis is, stuck at this point, we do not know Messrs. Manley, Peat. and Johansen are in this vicinity but of their exact whereabouts we have not heard. Mr. Vate writes in from Mei Cheo that six villages have been burned by the Baxers and that they are spreading the report that the Foreigners are paying the Christians '400 cash a day to do this work, so trying to get the people turned

Since, we learn that troops have gone to the scene of disturbance: what they will do is the question. If the promptest action is not taken officials. Up to the present they have been at once they will be beyond the power of the
