JACK ASHORE.

The Jolly sailor boy ashore seems to enjoy himself a good deal better than the land-lubber usually does afloat, remarks the North Chind Daily News. So one would judge who saw the men-of-war sailors' plenie at Unkaza list Tuesday (the 17th lost), Mr. and Mrs. Hogg had kindly granted the grounds, and about one hundred and sixty men came, mostly from H.M.S. Arethusa, with a few from the U.S.S Monterey The time from arrival till lunch was spent in various gamos, and strolling round the grounds. After an alfresco lunch under the trees, a capital sports programme was course and starter kept the ball a rolling, being carried out. Captain Startin as clerk of the well supported by the committee from the Arethusa, and never allowed a moment's dui- ness to lesson the interest of competitors and onlookers.

Some of events were most amusing and deserve a short description. In the boot and shoe race the competitors had to remove their boots, which were then piled "permscous-like" in a heap. The men had to run to this heap. pick out their boots, put them on and return,- the first man home to win.

The scene at the boot pile when twenty men Fieldmarshal Count Waldersee bas departed at once were looking for their boots can be for London.

CORONATION CELEBRATION, 220

"CANTON, June 25th. The following is the programme of events to celebrate the coronation of His Most Gracious Majesty King Edward VII,

June 26th.

Perhaps the most amusing race of all was the Victoria Cross race. A number of men, bound, hand and foot, lay on the ground, while the competitors ran to them, picked them up and carried them home, being exposed mean. while to a murderous fire of potatoes from the spectators.

Murphies to right of them, Murphies to left of them, Murphjes in front of them

Flung by the hundred. Pelted with old and new, Taters the people threw Back down the course they flew;

We laughed and wondered... About half-past five the whistle went for tea, and after that welcome meal the prizes, which had been provided by Captain Startin and Mr. Viloudaki, were presented to the winners by Mrs. Ilogg. Much amusement was caused when the ladies who had helped their partners in some of the events were called for as "Brown's partner". "Smith's partner" apparently Jones and Robinson did not win prizes for there was no Jones' or Robinson's partner.

Thanks are especially due to Mrs. Felgate and the Shaftesbury House for providing and distributing the refreshments; to Capt. Startin and the Arethusa committee for drawing up and carrying out such a capital sports pro- gramme; and Mr. and Mrs Hogg for kindly allowing their grounds to be used in so enjoy. able a manner.

THE WORD OF HONOUR,

The men who do as they say the things that prove to be what they were said to be, how cheering it is to come upon them. We all hate to be deceived; especially when the decep tian is Intentional. But all men are not liars, even if David did say so in bis haste. If they were society would be impossibile. Everybody knows that business is based on credit, on faith. Millions are bought daily on nothing more solid than the pledged promises of men, -not written, merely verbal. The Stock Ex- changes are often called nests of gamblers, yet nowhere is a promise held in greater honour. Therefore when we say that the tried and effective modern remedy called Wampola's 9.30Preparation " never deceives any who resort to it in hope of benefit and cure, we may expect

One has only to travel through the towns and villages around Canton to learn the terrible ravages plague has made this year. Canton has very largely escaped and some are led to conclude that plague has not been bad this year. It is safe to say that probably in po ene year have so many persons died from plague as in this year. Villages that have never known plague before bave suffered this year. In many instances villages have been practically shut up and the people taken to the hills. Mat-sheds have been erected and the people live in these. This wide spread epidemic of plague does not promise well for the future.
