This profound tectonic movement has had a most important effect upon the geological conditions in central and northern China, and will be a potent factor in the economic development. Evidences of dis- turbances and metamorphism are vary abun dant in the anthracite arens of the Yangtse valley. The coal in them, as in those of northern China, is often flaky and "slicken- sided." Cherts are also characteristic of the Yangtse valley beds, They ate frequently black. Whether or not these black cherts are interbedded in the limestone, is not certain.
Much of the coal that finds its way into the local markets in China is unusually high in ash; but it is not fair to infer this to be chars acteristic. With one exception, all coal now. produced in China, is derived from native operations, and the. Chinaman is not dis criminating. Anything that will burn is coal according to his notion.
