SMITHKINS,

BY LEO D'OLIVER (DOLLY). Smithkins was one of those unfortunato individuals who can never be offered a piece of gratuitous: advice, ithout feeling an

instant and unconquerable desire to act upon it which went to show there was as something (fundamentally) wrong with the mental equilibrium of Smitlikins. In this Smithkins differed greatly from the rest of his kind, for the arumage Hongkongile | always showed a cheerful alacrity in giving advice on every conceivable, topic, and on equally profound repugnance to considering advice offered to himsell by others.

delightedly astonished at seeing Smithkins brushing with hasty steps the dew away, clad in nothing more pretentious than a sleeping suit, his majestic form enveloped in two blankets

After much and painful cogitation, he had adopted this, as the only means of con- scientiously carrying out the conflicting advice given him the day before,

had gracefully retired into a "bed of roses," When it was concluded, and Smithkins

to say nothing of thorns, urged thereto by the pony's sudden and perplexing assump. tion of a vertical attitude in place of the horizontal, his friend explained the cause, while the mafoo tediously commenced the extmetion of the thorns, from that part of Smithkins anatomy that generally suffers most, when irreverent small boys surreptis tiously place drawing pins on their masters Chair

So the pony's fortunes rose with a bound, from the zero of starvation paint, to the ebullition point of full-and-plenty, and then Smithkins, displaying great finesse and tact, in keeping just out of reach, approached his arch-enemy with a view to further negotia tons,

The pony received him with such kindli ness, and so much apparent docility, that Smithkins forthwith ordered him out for a ride to the Polo ground, in order to accustom him to the place

Smithkins was by no means a good rider:: in fact, if the truth must out, he had only been on horseback, some fifteen times before, this, so it is not to be wondered at that be felt relieved at the prospect of a quiet without being given an opportunity of practising those buck-jumping tactics, to, which he was so averse.
