CHENAMEN AND THE PLAQUE,
GROTESQUE PROCESSION IN CALCUTTA.
Surely never, in the minds of the most prolific authors of Opera Buffe, was a sight seen as the pan which the residents of Bentinck Street, part of Lal Bazar, and the classic locality known as Soorhata in How bazar were treated to recedily. The ecca sion was intercession on the part of the Chinese inhabitants of these localities against the ravages of plague. There are hundreds in Calcutta, who had they but known it, would have flocked to view the strange procession. which starting from the Joss Chany House in Blackbuto's Lane went in orderly procession to. the big Chang In Bentinck Lane, and back thence: All the popular farces, all the grotesque bizarre dresses, everything which went against one's pré-conceived ideas, were to be

From half past three toss. four p.m. almost every Chinaman in Calcutin in dressed in variegated silk costume mainly May 26th. boaters' pink trousers, red putties, white shoes, The officers of the .s. There were handsomely appointed sedan chairs, containing Chinese girls and boys dressed in the finest silks and satins. These were follow. ed by crowds of bonzes dressed in typical yellow silk costumes with mush-room hats and bearing banners composed of silk with various Chinese gods on them. As the procession passed the shops in Bentinck Street the shop- keepers set off crackers before the man bearing the dragon and danced to the huge amusement of the spectators. Everything was conducted in the most orderly fashion, and after visiting the Chinese Joss house in Bentinck Street the procession returned in the same order. It is stated that this, procession cost its promoters
very nearly 5,000 rupees, including a sum paid to the Tramway Company for the stoppage of the cars for the period during which the proccessin occupied the roads,-Englishman.
