was impossible for passengers, to lis it full "length. The third-class accommodation was a little helter at least the passengers had room to take up a recumbent position, Bresumably the regulations have clauses limiting the num. ber of passengers to each class that a vessel may carry, and if so the rules should be properly. Enforced, otherwise there is hule use in such regulations, being made. At present, there seems very little trouble taken in the way of inspection so long as the vessel does not go outside Japanese waters.
THE COLLISION IN YOKOHAMA HARBOUR.
SOME FURTHER PARTICULARS
Further particulars by the Nippon Yusen Kaisha are given in the Japan Times of the collision in Yokobama harbour between the NY.K. steamer. Wakanoura-maru and the -British-Cruiser--Eclipse, reported_in_a_tele- gram. The Eclipse, it is stated, was lying with two other warships outside the other vessois. The Wakannura-mara, which was bound for Kobe, passed the two war-ships, without any indication that there was danger of collision, but on nearing the Eclipse, some cause, which can only be ascribed to her steer- ing gear, caused her to lose her course, and before there was time to reverse the engines she come into violent collision with the cruiser. She struck the Eclipse almost amidships, just over one of the gun ports, making a hole some four feet in diameter, partly below the water line, into one of the coal bunkers, Immediately the accident took place the water-tight doors on the cruiser were closed, and appliances used to prevent the water rushing in. The Wakanoura-marti escaped, uninjured, but immediately put back to port
One of the 47-in, guns was damaged in the collision,
A CLOSE EXAMINATION of the steering gear of the Wakanoura-naru after she returned to port, says our contem- porary, did not reveal any defect. She was, however, to be taken for a trial trip on Wednes- day afternoon to ascertain whether the gear was in working order. As a further precaution the Superintendent Engineer of the Nippon Yusen Keisha will accompany the vessel to Kobe should no defect be discovered in the meantime.
Mr. S, Iwanaga, the Managing Director of the Nippon Yusen Kaisha, visited Yokohama on Wednesday, and called on: Vice-Admiral Sir Cyprian Bridge to express regret for the occurrence. Mr. Y. Iwato, an Assistant Superintendent of the Company, also proceeded to. Yokosuka to call on the Captain of the Eclipse,
The Wakanaura--maru (1,500 tons) was formerly a China Mutual boat, She runs between Kobe and Otaru, but was just starting on her first trip up the Westcoast. The force of the impact between the two vessels may be imagined when it is noted that the armour over the gun positions of the Eclipse is three inches in thickness.
As already stated, the Eclipse has proceeded to Yokosuka for repairs.
