THE SANITATION AND WATER

SUPPLY OF HONGKONG.

At a meeting of the Sanitary Board held this afternoon the following recommendation of the Medical Officer of Health, relative to Mr. Oabert Chadwick's report on the sanitation and water supply of Hongkong was considered:-

I recomend that the Board resolve: That they fully concur in the following recommenda tions of Mr. Chadwick

WATER SUPPLY.

1. That the portion of a low level reservoir (with pumping station) in Taltamtuk Valley be proceeded with at once a. That works at Tai- tem in connection with the water supply should fake precedence of any such works at Pokfulam. 3 That the shutting off of all house services not provided with meters and the provision of standpipes in the streets, is the only suitable *method of curtailing the water supply, and should be adopted without delay, so as to obviate recourse to the intermittent system, which is a source of danger to the community oving to the possibility of the contamination of the supply throught the entrance of foul air foul liquids, and possibly disease germs Into the water mains and services. 4. That as im- plied in (3) all houses se vices be metered, and that an extra charge be made for all.waters used in excess of (ten) gallons per head per day.

SEWERAGE AND

„DRAINAGE.

5 That all gulleys and other inlets to the street sewers and storm drains should be trapped. 6. That close-barred gratings be fixed on all inlets in sewers and drians. 7. That the maintenance (scavenging and dushing) of the street sewers and drains be transferred to the Sanitary Board, so that the whole of the scavenging, work may be under one auth ority, 8. That all pipes used in house drainage work be required to be in accordance with standard sperification, and, that te Attain this object a depot be provided by the Government where pipes should be inspected and tested under the supervision of the Board's surveryor. g. That all house drains laid under a building be required to be of iron of standard quality to That as many as possible of the existing covered storm water drains and nullahs be uncovered and kept open so that they can be scavenged in the same. manner as a street, and that the duty of Scavenging such nullahs be transferred to the Haultary Board At the same time any exis ting storm drains which are not actually needed should be removed and the ground

MARBLE TOP TABLES, WHATNOTS, DEAR SIR, It has recently come to my TEAKWOOD DRESSING TABLES and knowledge that our Hongkong Fire Brigade WARDROBES with GLASS, OVERMAN- men are paid at the low rate of $9 per mensem, TELS, CARPETS, INDIAN RUGS, MAR- that out of this they are liable to a fine of $5BLE TOP WASHSTANDS, CROCKERY

and GLASS for very trifling mistakes, that they have to pay. DOUBLE WARE, ENGRAVINGS, their own ricksha hire when summoned to duty, and that they receive no damages for the injury sustained to their clothes while saving our lives and properly. So their pay for many hours overtime, at the dangerous work, battling with fires, amounts.to smoke,

Surely these policemen volunteers, who save us the expence of an independat brigade deserve some substantial recognition for their services.
