MUSIC WITH RIFLE SHOTS:-At the Hippodrome recently some, marvellous quick firing was done by Col, Borderveny. THE DEADLY CHIT-In these days or strict sanitary rule and microbe mania there is hardly a daily practice to which we have been accustomed that is not threatened by the medical tyrant, says an exchange. It appears now, on the authority of the Lancet that the most appalling risks are entailed in putting the morning's letters on ones plate at breakfast. It is undeniably a dirty practice," says the Lancet. In nine cases out of ten the envelope containing a letter is licked, as is also the stamp, by the sender. Infection, therefore, may easily turk here, especially as by the time the leffer reaches its destination the stamp and seated cover are dry. Any materies morbi, present would be easily detached." Add to this the riske of infection to which a letter is exposed in transit the postman or the sorter may have smallpox or something as bad-and you may as well make up your mind neither to write nor receive letters, for it seems to be that these considerations apply to letters at any time, and not only at the breakfast table
