THE INTERMARRIAGE OF MANCHUS AND CHINESE.
The commendation of the natural foot by the Court amounts to a prescription that Chinese women contemplating marriage with Manchus must not bind their feet, Mr. Y. J. Allen pointed out at the meeting of the Tien Tsu Hui that the Court once before sought to induce the Chinese to unbind the feet of their women as a mark of subjection to the Tartars, Chinese, deal but the women refised to adopt a custom which they regarded as a húmiliation imposed by the conquerors. Contact with the results of Western civilization and the new ideas which are now percolating through the minds of the bigher classes must, however, gradually affect a change in the present fashion of feet among the women of the Middle Kingdom, though it is sincerely to be hoped that the ladies of the Flowery Land will not as a consequence take to constricting their waists. The innovator in
the Boxer outbreak women who affected the obstacles of prejudice to overcome. During
ways of the "foreign devils" even so slightly as to wear sleeves narrower than the Chinese regulation size were subject to persecution. To bring about the general adoption of the natural foot the tradition of centuries has to be beaten down. The origin of the

BRITISH FIRMS IN JAPAN.
A memorandum has been published as a British Parliamentary paper containing replies from the British representatives abroad respect- ng the position of industrial and commercial establishments owned by British subjects or companies in foreign countries. The following is the reply received from Japan -
PRACTICE OF FOOT-BINDING dates back more than a thousand years. Tuan Fang, the Governor of Husch, who has recent ly published an exhortation to the people of his Province to abandon the custom, states that it began in 975 A. This style of pedal beauty so enraptured the Emperor Nan Tang that, as Tuan Fang observes, he went "mad on this fancy" and issued a decres ordering all his ladies to follow

But Her Imperial Majesty has will be chosen for an honour which Chinese women greatly fear. Tuan Fang, who is a Manchu, urges the Chinese gentry to set the example of reform by exhorting their women. folk to anbind their feet, and there is no doubt that this way, and by the efforts of mission- aries and the Tien Tau Hui, much is now being done to free the feet of China's fashion. crippled daughters.—Ex.
